Sighing, she said, “I took some things from Jerry’s safe when I went back to the house the morning after you were there. Jerry goes to the gym every morning around eight, so I waited on the street until I saw him leave. Once he was gone, I went inside to get some clothes, my gun and some money from my safe. And I opened Jerry’s safe, too.

“Found a lot of cash, which I assume he’d been stealing from the Russians. And some other stuff. I took about half of the money and anything else I thought might be important. Which was just about everything. Figured if he had them in his safe, they were important.”

“What kind of stuff?” Gideon asked carefully.”

“Stuff.” She pressed her lips together, signaling that’s all the details he’d get.

“Did you get a look at any of it?” he asked.

“When would I have done that?” she retorted. “I was too exhausted to care about Jerry’s stuff when I got to Minneapolis, then you were on my ass almost immediately. I was focused on getting away. Getting somewhere safe. I didn’t have time to look at any of it.”

“When we get to the Blackhawk Security compound, you’ll have plenty of time to read through them. I can help you, if you like.”

She narrowed her eyes. “I thought you had your own stuff to do once we got to that compound. You said you needed to keep investigating your boss and his boss.”

“I do. But I’ll have time for you.”

For a moment, she let his words warm her. Then she drew a deep breath. “I’ll take a look at it first. If I think I need help, I’ll ask you.”

She doubted that she’d ask. At least not until she knew what was in those files.

She’d never asked Gideon what his boss and his boss’s boss had been working on at the FBI. Why he got fired.

Now was as good a time as any to find out. They had a long drive ahead of them. She drew a deep breath. “The case you and your boss were working on before you were fired -- what was it about? And who were you investigating?”

Gideon tried to hide it, but she heard his sharp intake of breath.
