Gideon tucked her closer. “He knew you’d grown up in Seattle, right? You’ve lived nowhere but Seattle and the Chicago area. It wouldn’t be tough for him to guess you’d go somewhere familiar. Somewhere you might have friends. Family.”

“Other than that I grew up in Seattle and went to U Dub, he knows nothing about my life before we met,” she said.

He stared at Alex, incredulous. How could a man be so incurious about the woman he’d married? “He never asked about your childhood?”

“Nope. I told him I had a normal upbringing. Made up a story about a single mom who took good care of me. Protected me.” Her mouth quivered. “I was talking about Mary, not my birth mother, and that’s all he would have found if he looked me up.”

“He tracked you as far as Boughton. So I think it’s logical for him to assume you were heading for Seattle.”

“That is where I was going,” she admitted. “I know Seattle like the back of my hand. Where to hide. How to avoid attention.” She smiled. “The only difference between now and back then is that I have the money to protect myself. I could have stayed in a decent hotel. Gotten some space to figure out what to do next.”

Gideon smoothed his hand over her hair. He wanted to take some of her pain away. Make sure she felt safe. But the only thing he could do right now was get her to the compound. She’d be safe inside those walls. And he’d have time to dig into FBI records. Find out how Jerry was connected to the Bratva. And who else might be after Alex.

First, though, they had to get to the compound. “Let’s order some dinner, and we’ll watch the weather channel while we’re waiting for it. See when that pass might open up. With any luck, we’ll be on the road early tomorrow and we’ll lose Jerry. Leave him for the Russians to find.”
