He glanced over his shoulder and watched the regular rise and fall of Alex’s chest. Then stepped into the bathroom and closed the door. Started the shower.

Fifteen minutes later, he was dressed. Packed. He needed to wake Alex up so they could get going. It was four a.m., and the pass would probably be open soon. If they had to wait while the barriers were removed, that was fine. He’d watch for Jerry’s car behind them. With any luck, they’d be over the pass and on their way before Jerry spotted them.

Drawing a breath, he crouched beside Alex. Brushed the hair away from her face and pressed a kiss to her cheek. Her chin. Her lips.

She smiled, and her eyes fluttered open. “Gideon.”

Her voice was raspy, and he smiled as he bent and kissed her throat. “Whenever you say something today, I’ll remember every time you screamed last night.”

Even in the dim light, he saw pink spread across her face. She reached for him and tried to pull him back into bed. Scowled when she realized he was dressed.

“I had plans for this morning,” she murmured.

“Don’t say that, Alex. Please,” he groaned. “The only plan we can have right now is getting across that pass before Trotter spots us.” He pulled the duvet down to the foot of the bed. “I’m guessing you want a shower. I’ll see what snacky things I can scrounge from the room.”

She closed her eyes. Opened them and nodded. “I’ll be quick.”

Twenty minutes later, they rode the elevator down to the lobby with their suitcases. Gideon had her wait in the hotel lobby with their luggage while he checked out the parking lot. No white Mercedes Benz. No one sitting in a car, watching.

He hurried to Alex’s Subaru and pulled up to the front door. Alex stood in the vestibule, holding onto both suitcases. By the time he stopped and opened the rear hatch, she was out the door and heaving the suitcases into the back. In less than a minute, they were driving out of the hotel parking lot and heading for the interstate.

He glanced at the motel on the other side of the road. Spotted the room where they’d seen Trotter the night before. It was dark. No signs of life.

Either he was still asleep, or he’d already left. Gideon hoped it was the former. Was afraid it might be the latter. But he could take Trotter, one on one.

Unless Trotter had help. Unless the two Russians had caught up with him.

He pressed the accelerator harder and sped onto the interstate.
