“Oh, God,” she groaned, anticipation, arousal and frustration swirling through her. “I thought dinner would never end.” She reached for Gideon and wrapped her arms around him, loving the feel of his hard body against hers. When he pressed his lips to her hair and hummed in his throat, she snuggled closer. “They wouldn’t stop talking!”

His mouth curled against her scalp, and she lifted her head quickly, bumping his chin. “Are you laughing at me?”

“God, no,” he said, swiping his still-smiling mouth across hers. “I’m thinking the exact same thing. Did you read my mind back in the dining room?”

“I suspected we were on the same page,” she said, looping her arms around his neck.

“Yeah?” He cupped his hands around her cheeks. “What was your clue?”

“The way your foot jittered beneath the table. Made me want to climb in your lap in front of everyone.” She grinned up at him. “Suspected it might be a career-limiting move for you, though.”

“Possibly.” He nodded thoughtfully. “Since I was supposed to be guarding you. But maybe not. I’ve caught Dev looking at Mel when he thought no one was watching. Could start fires with the heat in his eyes.”

“Really?” She stared at him, fascinated. “Does Mel look at him the same way?”

“Not that I’ve seen,” he said. “She’s more guarded than Dev. More careful. But they’ve known each other for a long time. Maybe they have a history.”

“If that’s true, funny that they’d start a business together.”

He stepped away from her, and she immediately missed his heat. The press of his body against hers. But before she could object, he wrapped an arm around her shoulders and steered her toward the bedroom. “We can discuss Mel and Dev for as long as you like. Speculate. Come up with theories.”

“Forget Mel and Dev,” she said, squirming out from beneath his arm. “There’s only one question I need an answer to right now.”

“Yeah? What’s that?” His eyes heated and his pupils dilated. She wanted to rip off his clothes, but she forced herself to wait. Play a little. They had all night.

She reached for the waistband of his jeans. Pushed the button through the hole, and let her fingers linger on the bulge beneath his zipper. “I want these off. I want to see what you’re hiding.”

“I think you’ve already seen what I’m hiding,” he said. “More than once.”

“Oh, yeah,” she said. She licked her lips. Saw the flicker in his expression and savored it. “I have. And I want to see it again. Very soon. But I’m not talking about that.”

“What then?”

She unzipped his jeans. Shoved them down his hips, then ran her hands over his ass. Squeezed. “This,” she said, staring at him. “Your briefs.” She looked up at him and her mouth softened. “First Yoda and now the Avengers? I should have guessed you’d be a superheroes fan.” She traced the Captain America symbol, then smiled up at him. “Seems fitting. You were an FBI agent. Now you’re my own personal Captain America.”

He watched her for a moment, a smile quivering at the corners of his mouth. She wondered what she was thinking. Then he said, “I like this version of you, Alex.”

“What version is that?” she asked, watching him warily.

“Playful Alex.” He cocked his head and studied her face. Heat spread from every place his gaze touched. Made her yearn, for God’s sake. “I don’t think she puts in an appearance very often. She’s sweet and fun and completely seductive.” He drew her against him. “Everything I want in a lover.”

Heat filled her face. She was blushing. She never blushed. Never lost her composure or her control.

She had been playful once, a long time ago. But life had stolen her playfulness. Gideon was changing her. Bringing out a side of her she rarely showed people.

Because she trusted him.

Looping her arms around his neck, she whispered, “Take me to bed, Captain.”
