A silver Subaru Forester pulled up to the front of the hotel, and a few minutes later, a tall woman with dark red hair emerged from the lobby. Alex Conway. She hurried to the car, bending to speak into the passenger-side window. Gideon snapped a few pictures with his zoom lens.

When Alex looked around, scanning the parking lot, Gideon bent over, as if searching for something on the floor. He didn’t want her to spot him.

Eventually, the woman who’d driven up in the Subaru departed in a Lyft car, and Alex Conway parked the Subaru in the parking lot. His guess? She’d bought it. Paid cash.

When she disappeared back into the hotel, he pulled up the pictures on his camera. Stared at them for a long time.

Alex Conway was stunning. She had a strong face. A stubborn chin. Emerald green eyes, and waves of dark red hair curling around her face.

Not the kind of woman who could hide in a crowd. Her memorable face would draw attention wherever she went. He knew she was a defense attorney, and he’d bet she was a successful one. If she was as compelling as the news stories made her out to be, she’d keep a jury enthralled during opening and closing statements. No one would be able to look away from her. She’d have jurors hanging on every word.

No wonder Jeremy Trotter wanted his wife gone. She was a lot more dangerous than he was. The low-level grifter was out of his league with Alex Conway.
