“Interesting,” he said with a lopsided grin. “Want to guess what I had?”’

He was flirting with me. And I didn’t mind it. Not one bit.

Kevin was handsome, and he was one of those guys who would probably get more and more handsome the older he got. I could see him being the hottest soccer dad on the block. There was something wholesome about his appearance—maybe it was the argyle sweater he was wearing or the perfectly pleated khakis. In any case, he was the opposite of Oden, and for the moment, that was all that mattered.

I was all about the anti-Oden guys.

“I think I’ll take that challenge,” I said, leaning in and sniffing his neck.

“Hmmm, I’m gonna say black coffee and a cinnamon roll.”

“Whoa.” Kevin’s eyes widened in astonishment. Feeling proud of myself, I grinned from ear to ear. But then, he deadpanned, “You couldn’t be more wrong.”

A laugh escaped my lips. “I guess I’ll have to get a better sniff next time.”

Kevin’s lips curled into a playful smirk. “I guess so.”

Hannah cleared her throat, pulling Kevin and me from our flirtation. I could feel my cheeks grow hot, realizing she’d probably been waiting for us for a few seconds.

“Go ahead and have a seat,” she said, pointing at the two chairs that were set up in front of her desk, facing the tiny TV/VCR combo she’d propped there. “You’re going to watch a short video, and then we’ll get you started up front. It’s a slow day, so we’ll run through how to use the register and whatnot. Coolio?”

Kevin and I sat down and nodded. As Hannah was pressing play on the VCR, Kevin leaned in.

“I lied.”

“What?” I asked.

“I had black coffee and a cinnamon roll.” He bit down on his lower lip and raised his eyebrows. A smile crept across my face and didn’t leave until the credits rolled on our training video.

Well, this is going to be interesting.
