“Whoops,” Kevin said, tilting his head to the side, looking like he couldn’t care less. “My bad.”

“And we all know you’re just pissed off that Tilly rejected you,” Naomi said, her voice sharp.

“Amen,” Dutch said from the register, raising his fist in solidarity. I couldn’t help but laugh.

These really are my people.

“Get your stuff, clock out, and get out of my store.”

“It’s not your store. And you can’t do that; you’re not my boss.”

“Listen, I’m confident Hannah will have my back on this. But even if she doesn’t, I don’t care. I’ll take the hit, even if it means I get fired, too. You’re done, Clooney. Done.”

Kevin glared at me, his nostrils flaring. I gave him the sappiest, sweetest smile that I could muster. I was never the best actress, but I was really motivated to piss him the hell off.

“Don’t let the door hit ya on the way out,” I said with a wink and a finger gun. Just for the hell of it.

Wyatt burst out laughing, and Kevin pushed away from the counter, stalking toward Wyatt, his chest heaving. “You wanna go?”

“Are you serious?”

“Let’s go. Outside, right now.”

Wyatt, looking unimpressed, nodded. “Sure. You want to take my lunch money, too?”

A few customers laughed, and Sully stormed away from the register and stood between Kevin and Wyatt.

“Watch it. He’s a customer.”

“So what?”

“Okay. Fine. Harass my customer and see what happens.”

“Is that a threat?”

“Absolutely. And just so we’re clear, if you say one more word to him, I’m calling the cops.”

“Riiiiiight. You don’t have the balls,” Kevin said with a laugh.

“Well, this should be fun,” Naomi said, leaning into the counter. “Want me to grab the phone for you, Sully?”

Sully nodded. “Thank you, Ace.”

“Boo ya!” Dutch yelled. And I knew he was wishing he had a bowl of popcorn so he could hop on the counter and take in the show. “Sully’s about to open up a can of whoop-ass!”

Naomi handed the cordless phone to Sully.

“Go ahead, Clooney. Try me,” Sully said, crossing his arms, his eyes dark and angry, but slightly amused by the situation. “It’ll be nice to see them drag you out that door.”

Kevin looked at Sully, then to Wyatt, and finally to me. His eyebrows pinched together, and his cheeks were flushed. He, as well as everyone else in the store, knew that Sully was deadly serious. He didn’t make idle threats.

“Whatever,” Kevin said, running his fingers through his dark hair. “I’m outta here. This place sucks.”

Instead of walking to the back to clock out, he pushed past Sully to the front door.

“It’s been real,” I said, waving a dramatic goodbye as the door closed behind him.

“Piss off, assholes!” he yelled, flipping us the bird as he walked away.
