“Nope,” I said, pressing my lips together in a thin line. “Did you come for the party?”

“Party? No, um, school let out yesterday, and I wanted to surprise Tilly. My parents gave me the car for the weekend, so here I am,” she said. “And here you are.”

The bathroom door opened. “Did Marie take all my booze?” Tilly called out.

Ronnie and I just stared at one another as Tilly came down the hall, wrapped in a violet-colored towel. Her pink skin turned ashen as she stared at the two of us; her hand fell to her stomach. “Ronnie! Oh, my God, what are you doing here?”

“Surprise,” Ronnie said, her voice cold. She was unable to hide her annoyance.

“Yeah,” Tilly said, scratching her forehead, looking at Ronnie, then at me, and back to Ronnie. “So, um…okay, this is weird. I’m—I’m going to get dressed and then I’ll explain everything. I promise.”

Ronnie and I said nothing as Tilly disappeared down the hallway and closed her bedroom door. “So, um, how was Norway?” Ronnie asked with an awkward laugh.

“It was…” I was set to answer, then shook my head. “I’m sorry, did she really not tell you about me? That we’re back together?”

“You are?” Ronnie asked, looking stunned. “Um, no, she told me nothing. Zip, zero, nada.”

My posture stiffened as I tried to slow my racing heart. I was pissed.

“I, uh…I’ve got to go. Tell Tilly I’ll be back later, okay?”

“Wyatt—”

“I just need some air, okay?” I said, turning away from Ronnie to grab my backpack, then before she could say another word, I was out the door.

I left Tilly’s apartment and walked back to Langford.

I’d asked not to be her secret, but it turns out, that’s exactly what I was.
