“Oh, I know.” She switched off the television and winked. “But you should be.”

“Oh, really?” I said, jumping out of bed and chasing her around the room. She giggled, crawling over her bed and grabbing a bed post. I pretended to jump to the left, so she moved to the right. We both grinned, and she playfully raised an eyebrow.

“You know I’m too fast for you,” she teased.

“Is that so?”

“Did you forget I went to state?”

“No,” I shook my head. “Because you never let me forget.”

Tilly was set to be the captain of the soccer team at our high school for the upcoming school year, and she was, by far, the fastest player on the team. The track coach begged her every year to join his ranks, but Tilly always politely declined. She wanted to focus on soccer.

Soccer and singing.

As fast as Tilly was on the field, her speed was nothing compared to the pitch and timbre of her voice. And I was one of the lucky ones that got to hear her sing. Often.

She wiggled her eyebrows and crawled over her bed again. This time, I launched myself onto the end of the mattress, my arm crashing on top of her stomach, and I pulled her in.

She pretended to struggle, but I could feel her easing into me. She dragged her fingers up and down my forearm, and goose bumps rose to meet them.

“Like pieces of a puzzle,” she whispered as she eased into me. “We always fit.”

“Always,” I said with a smile before kissing her neck.

“Wanna see a movie tonight?” I asked, nestling into her neck and inhaling her scent. I wasn’t ready to let go. “My brother said The Fugitive is really good.”

“Wait. Who’s in that again?”

“Harrison Ford.”

“Ooh, Han Solo. I could get into that.”

“Of course, you could,” I said, pretending to be jealous of her longstanding crush on Harrison Ford.

“Hey, you know he’s my over-fifty crush.”

“I know, I know.”

“But wait, I saw the preview for this one. It’s a total guy movie.”

“So? I went to that witch movie with you.”

“Hocus Pocus,” she said. There was a bite to her words. “And I know you loved it.”

“It was weird. Like, those witches basically drained the life out of children so they could stay young.”

“And?”

“And that’s fucked up.”

“You’re reading too much into it.”

“I’m just shocked it’s marketed to kids. That shit’s creepy.”

Tilly turned to face me, kissing me on the nose. “You’re too much sometimes.”

“I thought that’s what you liked about me,” I said, biting down on my lower lip.
