“No,” she said, and a tear slipped down her cheek. “I just always thought we’d go to school together, you know? We’d play for a small school, be roommates, all that stuff.”

“I have to follow my passion. I’ll always regret it if I don’t. And if I’m lucky enough to get into Lurie’s, I’ll know it’s where I need to be.”

“I know, I get it.”

“And I promise you, here and now, no resentment, okay? None. Whenever I can, I’ll drive to your school and cheer you on.”

“Swear it?” She lifted her hand and offered me her pinkie.

“Swear it,” I said with a smile.

“I think I will walk with you to Wyatt’s.”

“You don’t have to do that.”

“I want to.”

I smiled. “Cool.”

The August sun beat down on us as we rounded the corner to the cul-de-sac where Wyatt’s family lived. A jet-black stretch limousine was parked on the driveway, its trunk open and the motor running.

“Fancy,” Veronica said. “A few months late for prom. Who’s getting married?”

“No one…at least, Wyatt didn’t tell me anything.”

“Maybe his parents are going to some fancy gala or something.”

“At ten a.m.?”

“Yeah, weird.”

Wyatt’s mom walked down the driveway, carrying two large pieces of luggage. The driver quickly grabbed them from her and placed them in the trunk.

“Business trip?”

“His mom doesn’t work.”

Wyatt pushed through the front door, three different bags hanging from his shoulders. His brother followed close behind, carrying his own bags. His dad was nowhere in sight.

“End of summer vacation?”

“He would’ve told me.” I swallowed hard. “Right?”

No, something was off. Especially when I thought about Wyatt’s unpredictable mood, his normally laid-back nature a thing of the past.

Something was definitely going on, and deep down in my gut, I knew this limousine and the family’s luggage had everything to do with it.

“Do you think he’s…moving?”

“What?” My heart raced, and my lungs heaved. I could feel panic rushing through me. Veronica placed her hand on my back. “No way!”

“If they’re not going on vacation, then what is it?”

“I don’t know.” I stared at Wyatt, who was talking to his mom. Their body language was tense, and Wyatt wouldn’t look her in the eye. His brother had red, puffy eyes. “I have to talk to him, find out what’s going on.”

“Totally. Do you want me to go with you?”

“No, you have that baby shower. I’ll…I’ll be fine. I’m sure it’s nothing—a vacation, like you said. He probably just forgot to tell me.”
