“Why do we have to make sense? What does that even mean?”

“He’s your rebound, Till. A damn good rebound, but still, we both know that’s exactly what he is.”

“He is not a rebound.” Even as the words left my mouth, I knew they were lies. Oden was nothing if not my rebound. He was a Band-Aid in the shape of a hottie. Ronnie knew it. I knew it. Hell, everyone at our school probably knew it.

Maybe everyone except Oden. To him, he was my knight in shining armor, and Wyatt was just a guy I used to date. He didn’t know the extent of my feelings for the boy across the ocean.

“I just don’t think you should base your college experience on a guy who could be out of the picture before you even start your fall semester. That’s, like, five months away. What if you break up before then?”

“I’ll still go.” I shook my head. “I told you, they have an excellent Arts program.”

“But why did you blow off your audition at Lurie, Till?”

“Oh, my God! Not you, too.”

“Tilly.”

I tossed the envelope onto my bed and crossed my arms in front of my chest. “Don’t start, okay? It’s bad enough I have my mom breathing down my neck. Illinois has a good program. Period.”

“And Oden will be there.”

“Yes, he will.”

“And you don’t want to go to Lurie’s…why?”

Closing my eyes tight, I finally told the truth. “Because Lurie’s was our plan. Wyatt’s and mine. It was for us to do together. And now…now it’s like, even though I’ve always wanted to go there, to be there without him just feels weird…and wrong.”

“So, why didn’t you just say that?”

I sat down on the bed, hanging my head in my hands, unable to look Ronnie in the eye.

“Because I realize how lame it sounds. I always considered myself a feminist, for God’s sake. And I shit all over my own plans because of a guy. How pathetic is that?”

She sat down next to me and placed her arm around my shoulder. Squeezing just a bit, she leaned in and said, “It’s just shitty timing. Everything is raw right now.”

Tears spilled from my eyes. “He left months ago. Why does it still hurt so much?”

“The way it all happened was just crazy. You never got a chance to deal.”

“Can I show you something?” I asked.

“Sure,” she said.

Reaching down, I grabbed my backpack and pulled the stack of envelopes that were tied together with a piece of twine.

“What are those?” Veronica asked, sounding intrigued as I passed the unopened letters to her. “Norway? Oh, my God, he’s been writing you?”

“Yes.”

“So, what do they say?”

“I don’t know.”

She flipped over the stack and inspected the envelopes. “You haven’t opened them. Why not?”

“I can’t.”

“Tilly, the guy has been writing you for months and you’re just ignoring him?”
