Her breath caught, and blood rushed to her cheeks as she stared at me, looking overwhelmed. She pulled her hand away, cleared her throat, and walked away. She stopped in her tracks, turned around, and grabbed the tape, staring me down. With her eyes boring into mine, she walked slowly to the shelf where I’d grabbed the movie from, dramatically placing it back where it belonged.

“I’ll make my own picks, thanks,” she said, tilting her head to the side, looking satisfied with her retort.

Shaking my head, I laughed, knowing I was getting under her skin just like I used to do in her bedroom while watching music videos on MTV.

This isn’t over. Not by a long shot.

“See you in an hour, Tilly.”

She walked away, throwing one hand up to wave goodbye, the contempt in her words feeling forced for the first time in years. “Can’t wait.”

And I couldn’t wait. Walking outside to join Ruben and Dahlia at the quad, I took a deep breath, knowing it would be the longest hour of my life. But I also knew that I still had a shot with Tilly.

And that’s all that mattered.
