“You and I both know the season is never over.”

“Till, please.”

“Okay, sorry. I don’t mean to be preachy.”

“It’s spring break; I’m just trying to relax. School has been…I don’t know.”

“No, tell me,” I said above the booming music that came pouring from the sliding glass door as someone walked outside. My stomach flipped when I saw his face.

Oden Fucking Marcelo.

Oden in his khaki cargo pants and a wool sweater that most likely came from Abercrombie & Fitch. A bucket hat was perched on his ridiculous, always-trendy head.

“Oh, sorry. I just needed some fresh air,” Oden said before we locked eyes. “Hey, gorgeous.”

“Suck it, Oden.”

“Well, that’s friendly.”

“We’re not friendly,” I countered icily. “Not since you got overly friendly with someone else. Did you miss the memo?”

Oden smirked, which made me want to punch him square in his perfect jaw. “I’ve been telling you for what—a year now? I didn’t cheat on you, babe.”

“Don’t call me that,” I said. His tone was infuriating—like we were still together, still a couple, still a thing. “And please don’t insult my intelligence. I walked in on the two of you having sex. Like literally stood there and saw you, clear as day.”

His smirk mocked my anger. “It’s not what it looked like.”

“Don’t go there, Oden. I know what I saw,” I said through clenched teeth.

“She was hitting on me, that’s true. But I was pushing her away. Literally, as you walked through the door, I was getting her off of me.”

“Right,” I said, shaking my head. “You really think I’m an idiot, don’t you?”

Ronnie cleared her throat. “FYI, Oden, we were trying to have a conversation before you so rudely interrupted us.”

“Ask me if I care,” he said, not even looking Ronnie in the eye. His gaze remained locked on me.

Ronnie ignored him and continued. “I know you don’t really know what a conversation is, so let me explain it to you. It’s when two people who have more than a handful of brain cells, communicate with one another using their words.”

“Oh, Veronica,” Oden said, shaking his head. “I have not missed you. Not even a little.”

“Likewise,” Ronnie said, reaching into her pocket for another cigarette. I clenched my teeth as I watched her, knowing that Oden wasn’t making anything better for either of us.

“Did you get enough fresh air?” I asked him, raising my eyebrows and placing my hands on my hips.

Oden took in a dramatic breath, then blew it out. “Nah, not yet. I think I’ll stay out here a little longer. Maybe we can…get reacquainted.”

“Ugh,” I said, looking up at the stars in the midnight blue sky. “You’re barking up the wrong tree, man. It’s not gonna happen.”

“Oh, come on…you still think I’m cute.” He winked.

Barf.

“Gross,” I said, shaking my head as I scanned him from head to toe, wondering what the hell I ever saw in the guy.

“Oh, right, probably because you’re still pining for that wuss.”

Fury almost choked me. A lump formed in my throat, and heat stirred my belly. “What did you say?”
