“Here’s what I don’t get, though,” Naomi said as we walked back to Spotlight. “If you’re not together, won’t that break your heart just as much? The heartbreak of missed opportunity?”

“Not sure,” I said as we walked into the store.

“Tilly and I will man the desk. You guys go eat your pizza,” Naomi said, handing the Snapple bottle to Sully. “We’ll eat when you’re done.”

“Thanks, Ace.”

Grabbing the pepperoni pizza from me so that I wouldn’t have to interact with Kevin, Naomi handed it to him and leaned in, lowering her voice as soon as Sully as out of earshot. “Make sure he drinks that. In fact, disconnect the damn coffee pot altogether. We don’t want him getting all twitchy again. He’s mean when he’s twitchy.”

“I’m not his keeper,” Kevin snarled, taking the pizza box and Snapple from Naomi.

“Well, isn’t that special?” Naomi said, doing her best Church Lady impression as the guys walked away. “You’re welcome for the pizza, dickhead.”

“He’s such a tool.”

“Oh, yeah, big time.” Naomi ran her fingers through her hair as I placed our slice-sized pizza boxes down on the counter. “Okay, where were we?”

“You think I’ll be equally heartbroken if I don’t go for it with Wyatt.”

“I do. I mean, c’mon, you said yourself you’re the one who jumped his bones, not the other way around.”

“That’s true.”

“And, how was it?”

“I told you, it was…incredible. Possibly the best kiss of my life.”

“Well, yeah, not surprising.”

“What do you mean?”

“It’s the anticipation. Did I ever tell you about how Ben and I got together?”

“I know he was the assistant manager, but that’s it.”

“We didn’t like each other…like, at all. I used to call him Buzzkill Ben.”

“Wait, I heard you say that just the other day.”

“Well, yeah, but now I say it lovingly. When I first started here, I meant it completely. He pissed me off, like, all the time. He acted like he had a pole shoved up his ass. Suuuuper uptight.”

“Wow, sounds like the greatest love story of our time.”

Naomi let out a hearty cackle, throwing her head back. “Where have you been all my life, Tilly? I’ve been waiting for a friend like you, for real. You don’t mince words, and neither do I.”

“I’ve noticed,” I said with a wink.

A customer approached the desk, and I quickly made myself look busy as Naomi rang them up. Once he left the store, I gestured toward Naomi. “Go on.”

“Oh, right. Ben and me. So, we hated each other and fought all the damn time, but when we finally realized that the reason we fought all the time was because we were crazy about each other, it made everything even more intense. The kisses, the time together, all of it…because of the anticipation.”

“Huh,” I said, staring off into space.

“You haven’t seen Wyatt in, what? Three years?”

“Almost.”

“That’s what I’m saying! That’s a whole lot of sexual tension with no place to go.”
