“Why do you have to string it out with Jack?”

“I want to keep annoying Chase. It’s a game.”

“And what about Jack?”

“He’s also trying to get back at Chase.”

“Why?” she asked.

“Chase fucked Jack’s girlfriend back when they were college buddies.”

Sara’s face contorted. “Ew.”

Just hearing myself discuss this made me realize what a hideous game this had become. “It’s not nice, is it?” Forcing a smile, I really wanted to cry.

“It isn’t. And it’s not you, Ives. I think Chase has suffered enough.”

“Is that what Hunter thinks?”

“Hunter gave Chase a grilling for not telling you the truth.”

When my phone pinged, my heart fluttered. Missing his crazy texts, I’d unblocked Chase’s number.

Although I hoped it was one of his silly donkey love songs, my spirit quickly sagged when I saw it was Jack.

I didn’t even read it.

“Not anything important?” Sara asked, watching me put my phone away.

I shook my head. “Only Jack. I’m going to end it. You’re right. We’ve got nothing in common, and I don’t like the way he smells.”

“Huh? He stinks?” Sara scrunched her face.

“Maybe not stink as such. I don’t like his cologne, and he smells of cheese.”

“Ew.”

Sara’s grimace made me chuckle. “I don’t know what it is. Chase smells good enough to eat.”

“You’re just in love, sweetie.”

“It’s going to be difficult to go back there after the high of being proposed to.”

“I know. But Chase is seriously smitten. He keeps coming over. Something he’s never done before. Just to talk. And he always wants to know about you.”

I perked up. “So he’s not dating?”

“Not that I’m aware of. Last time I saw him, he was off to meet a woman named Cassandra.”

My veins tightened. “When was that?”

“A couple of days ago.”

“That’s when he sent the singing donkey telling me he can’t live without me.” My mouth trembled slightly.

Sara smiled sadly. “Why don’t you just give yourself a break from men and develop your blog?”

I played with my fingers. “You’re right. I’m too male-obsessed. I hate being single. I wonder if it’s because I was closer to my dad.”
