He noticed the tears, though. He always did. I couldn’t hide anything from this man. His eyes softened, shining with concern, as he brushed a stray strand of hair away from my face.

Losing track of time, I stared into his eyes, forgetting to breathe while my legs turned to jelly.

“Back at me for what?” Chase’s perfect brow creased. “Hey, I’m not on fucking Tinder.”

I grabbed my phone and clicked on the app that, up to this point in my life, had done nothing but fuck with my head. None of my past relationships had even come from a swipe of my finger—that included Chase. We’d met at his family’s party, the same night Liam met his husband.

As I studied the profiles of males eager to hook up, I discovered Chase’s profile was no longer there. “You obviously just removed it, because earlier, you were there.”

He rubbed his knuckles.

“Are they sore?” I asked, lowering my brow with concern.

As he shook his head, his lips twitched into a smile. “I went easy on him.”

I had to admit Chase looked even more fuckable when roughed up. A burning ache stormed through me. Perhaps that was my hormones having a party with the sudden surge of testosterone that had just rescued me, a damsel in distress.

As we gazed into each other’s eyes, my body ached for his touch. My breathing grew ragged. I had to restrain myself from falling into his strong body. If only I hadn’t seen my mother with my ex, I wouldn’t be so insecure and uptight about Chase breaking my heart.

But I liked Chase for more than just hot sex. He also made me laugh. I could be myself around him. He’d seen me in the mornings when I looked like I’d been in a blizzard, with my hair all over the place and makeup-streaked eyes. He’d seen my freckled face clean of makeup and told me he liked me best that way. Even if he was lying, Chase knew how to make me feel good about myself.

“I plain forgot to remove my profile. I’m sorry. There’s a lot of shit going on in my life. It was an honest mistake.” He brushed away his hair, making it stick up like it did after we’d just fucked.

“It’s not just that. I can’t handle the girls. Every time we go out, there’s one or two or twenty that you’ve been with.”

“And what about you?” he asked, cocking his finely chiseled features. “There’s that… what the fuck’s his name?”

“Leo. I’ve threatened him with a restraining order.”

He took my hand and stared deeply into my eyes, making my heart race. “I’ve never asked any girl for a weekend away. Ever.”

“Ever? You’re thirty years old.” I opened my hands. “How is it you’ve never had a relationship?”

Chase shrugged. “Do you want to give me a minute to pay my tab, and we can go somewhere to talk?”

I could go back to my place, confront my mother, and have that talk. Or I could fall into his buff arms and get drugged on orgasms.

The first option was sensible. The second was reckless.

It still took me a second to decide. “I’ll wait here.” I held up my finger. “But that doesn’t mean we’ll fuck later.”

“Whatever. Just looking at your pretty face will be enough.”

I rolled my eyes at his charm-my-panties-off response.

He shook his head. “What?”

“You’re full of shit.”

“So you keep saying.” He smirked. “Don’t go anywhere.”

I leaned against the wall and took a deep breath to still my heart, which was racing like mad. I couldn’t tell if it was from Eric’s sleazy advances or Chase coming to the rescue like a romantic action hero.

Watching him talking to his buddies, I could see Ben whispering something and Chase pulling a face. He strutted back wearing a half-grin. As his eyes settled on mine, I looked away, feigning disinterest. My trembling legs alone contradicted that.

Joining me on the sidewalk, he said, “Where would you like to go?”

I shrugged. “Anywhere, I suppose.”
