I nodded slowly, like a man condemned. Advertising wasn’t exactly part of my life plan, which was still a work in progress.

“Okay. I better go and hang out with Heather.” I paused. “Does she smile?”

“I haven’t seen her teeth yet, but hey, it’s all about business and results. They can be manic depressives for all I care, as long as Elliot’s kicking ass.”

I sniffed. “Mom’s dramatic take on life is rubbing off on you.”

I left his office and, two doors away, stepped into mine.

Raking my hand through my hair, I stared at the empty trays on the barren desk—a sad reminder of my lengthy absence.

I called Jenny, the admin assistant, and seconds later, she stood at my desk.

“Can you get me a double-shot espresso?”

“Coming up, Mr. Elliot.”

“Call me Chase, please.”

“Sure.”

I studied her for a moment. Have we fucked?

I puffed out a tight breath, praying my wicked past wouldn’t come back to haunt me.

When Jenny brought in my coffee, I stared up at her, suddenly remembering a night on the town after the last Christmas party. I returned an apologetic smile in advance, hoping she could read my mind.

“You’ll be seeing a lot more of me, and well…” I played with my fingers. “About that time…”

“Hey, Mr. Elliot, it’s okay. We’d both been drinking, and I’m now in a happy relationship.”

“I’m pleased for you.” I studied her closely. “Then we’re good?”

“Well, apart from you breaking my heart and me crying for a month when you didn’t return my calls, I’ve moved on. All’s forgiven and forgotten.”

My brows squeezed so tight, my head hurt. Is she serious? I studied her deadpan expression. “Oh. Shit. Sorry. I mean…”

She giggled. “Only playing with you. You should have seen your face.”

Still frowning, I chuckled. “Right. A joker. Good.” I loosened up, because when it came to jesting, I was right there. And if one couldn’t laugh at their little regrettable fuck-ups, then life sucked. “Tell me, what do you know about our new CFO?”

“Ms. Sharp, as she likes to be known, needs everything a certain way.”

“Right. A control freak, you mean?”

“Oh, she’s that, all right. She’s a multi-tasker. She expects everyone to be that way.”

“Great. Thanks for the heads-up.”

“You’re welcome.”

I watched Jenny leave and took a deep breath. My phone beeped and sure enough, Ms. Sharp wanted a meeting. Now.

I sauntered over to her office and entered. “You need me?”

She peered up from her screen and pointed to a stack of files. “Yes, I need you to go through these for me.”

Scratching my stubbly jawline, I asked, “What exactly do you want me to do?”
