“Where does all that cynicism come from?”

“It’s called a college degree, Mom. And Dad wasn’t exactly into wearing a wizard’s robe and clean living.”

She put her arm around me. “If you want me to stop seeing Mitch, I will.”

I shook my head. “No way. I just would’ve liked to have been told. How long have you been together?”

“We connected at the Tantra workshop I attended two weeks ago. And we haven’t been able to stay apart since.”

“Oh, so that’s why you haven’t been home much?”

“Yes.” She wore a sunny smile. “We have a deep connection. My Venus and Mars are in conjunction with his sun. His Pluto trines my Venus. And his Jupiter trines my Jupiter. We’re so well matched.”

Mother and her astrology.She was constantly analyzing my relationships. Interestingly, Chase’s chart, according to her, had shown the most promise. Although I didn’t subscribe to that mumbo-jumbo, my heart had still done a little victory lap.

My phone beeped, and the devil’s face lit up. I’d changed his picture during my hating-Chase phase, and I hadn’t switched his photo back. I hadn’t been able to bring myself to kill his number, so I’d killed his handsome head on my phone instead.

It read: What are you doing later? Dinner?

I typed: Nothing. I could use a strong drink, though.

He replied: Yes, please… what a morning. I need to see your pretty eyes.

I smiled and wrote: Not so pretty today. Didn’t sleep much.

He replied: Anyone I know?

You know him well.

He wrote: I look forward to hearing about it. Salacious details and all.

I smiled. See you at Absinthe? Seven?
