I rose and, meeting her face-to-face, kissed her cheek. Her skin seemed dipped in a river of perfume.

“Nice to see you again,” I said.

Her gaze traveled up and down, and a smile slowly grew. “Ah… so you remember me now?”

“How could I forget such a pretty face?” I said, pulling out her seat.

“Charming as ever.” She sat down.

“What would you like?” I asked.

“A martini.” She looked around for the waiter then clicked her fingers. He came over immediately.

After she ordered, Cassandra studied me intently. “I must say, I’ve been expecting a call for a while.”

“Yeah. Look… about that… it was…”

She laughed. “I’m just playing with you, Chase. Although… you were good. Really good. A woman doesn’t forget a man like you in a hurry.”

I drained my glass and ordered another when the waiter deposited Cassandra’s drink.

“Keep them coming,” she said.

I raised my eyebrows. “Oh, you’re having a big night?”

“We are, yes.” She tilted her head.

“I might not be able to stay that long. I’ve got a big day tomorrow.”

“I’d say you’ve got a big month.”

More like a big fucking year!

“There’s a function that I need a date for. It’s a reunion with college pals. One of those mine-is-bigger-than-yours love fests.”

Her dry tone made me chuckle. “Okay. That’s tonight?”

“Yes. You’re the perfect candidate. You’re rich, hot, and successful.” She twisted her lips. “Mm… maybe not so successful if what I hear about you is true—the promiscuous bar hopper who makes a sport of breaking girls’ hearts.”

“That’s about to change.” I stared morosely at my fingers, wondering what a gold band would look like.

“There’s nothing like delayed gratification for coming like a cannon ball.”

I laughed. “Wow. You’re very direct.”

“Never been one to blush or skim the edges.”

I opened my hands. “Look, Cassandra, I’m kind of seeing someone.”

“I don’t care. Just put your hand on my ass occasionally and whisper dirty somethings. That’s all I ask.”

I nodded slowly. “Right. So you want me to be your fake date?”

“That’s right. I was thinking of hiring someone, but when you called, I thought you owed me a favor.” She smirked.

So did we fuck? Or is she just playing with me?

Choosing to ignore the mind games, I decided to cut to the chase. “Talk to me about Whitman’s. I get that they’re undercutting us, but how’s their campaign going?”
