She shrugged. “Why not? Whitman’s have the same brief. Whoever comes up with the sexiest pitch wins.”

I thought about Ivy’s mom, who was a cashed-up New Ager. She would be a good person to bounce ideas off. “I can do that. And whatever he’s charging, we’ll lower it.”

“Good. I like that. A bit of healthy, if not useful, competition to help the profits. In the meantime, drink up. We need to go.”

“Is what I’m wearing okay?” I gestured to my tailored Italian blazer and designer jeans.

She shrugged. “I think that’ll work. And you can work the room. There’ll be a lot of potential clients there. Even Whitman will be there. That should be fun seeing your former pal.”

“Now you’re making me laugh.”

“What did you do? Weren’t you best pals once?”

“I had sex with his girlfriend. By accident.”

“By accident?” She wore a bemused frown.

“It had been a big night. I crashed in his bed, and she jumped in. I was so out of it, I didn’t know who the hell she was.”

“And let me guess—Jack found you wrapped around each other in morning?”

I sighed. “Yep. He punched me in the nose, and we haven’t spoken since. Mind you, I tried to explain, but he wouldn’t listen.”

“Yes, he’s got a big ego and a little dick.”

I nearly choked on my whiskey. “So you have been there?”

“No. But word gets around.”

“That’s not something I’ve heard.” I grinned.

Cassandra possessed the sort of brash honesty that made that town seductive and dangerous at the same time.

“I can’t wait to see you in the same room together.”

I studied her. “Why do I get this feeling you’re itching for a fight?”

“Now who doesn’t like watching two cocks fighting?” She raised her chin with a smirk.

“Me. I’m an animal lover.”

She laughed. “Let me guess, pussies being your favorite?”

“And yours, too, it seems.” I raised an eyebrow. “If you don’t mind me asking, for someone so upfront, why aren’t you out of the closet?”

Cassandra’s grin faded. “I’m dealing with mainly older clients. It’s a family business. I need to come across as old-school.”

“But a reunion?” I asked. “I’m sure your college buddies would understand.”

She looked wistful. “Mm… maybe. Not yet. Soon. When my dad’s no longer around, I’ll come out. He’s super religious. I love him, and I’d hate to tip his world upside down.”

“I guess he also wants grandchildren.”

“Yep. It’s a bit of a struggle.” She forced a smile.

I felt for her. “I’m sorry. It must be difficult. Even though everyone’s out these days and marrying, which I think is great. My cousin Ambrose recently married his boyfriend.”

“Maybe. I might tell Dad one day.” She looked out the window for a moment before returning her attention to me. “Okay. Enough of the deep shit. You’re my boyfriend for the night. Yes?”

“Okay.” I gulped, hoping this ruse wouldn’t come back to haunt me. “What do I tell them?”

“That you met me at a work function. We’ve only been seeing each other for a month. That way, you don’t know much about me.”

“Okay. I can do that.” I rose. “Let’s go then, girlfriend.”

She laughed, and I followed her to the door and jumped ahead so I could open the door.

“Now you’re going all nineteenth century on me,” she said.

“Acting like a gentleman never goes out of style,” I said as we stepped onto the sidewalk.
