Page 54 of In League with Ivy

Even juggling firesticks and gas-filled chainsaws simultaneously, Chase’s aloof mother would not have batted an eyelid.

While mumbling something about the impressive art collection hanging on the walls, I felt sweat trickling from my armpits.

I was relieved when Chase rejoined us with his father in tow.

My new boyfriend placed his arm around my waist and drew me close as if to make the bone-melting point that we were now a couple.

“Dad, this is Ivy, the girl I’ve been raving to you about.”

Raving?

He held out his hand. “Mason Elliot. Nice to meet you.”

I shook his large hand and noticed a similarity between the older man and his son. Chase shared his mother’s dark eyes, though.

After a little small talk, his parents were called away. Mason Elliot had seemed genuinely pleased to meet me. He’d even asked Chase to invite me over for dinner so that we could all meet properly.

I nodded with an “I’d like that” smile.

The waiter passed, and we each collected a glass of champagne.

After washing down the angst generated by chatting to his somewhat-hostile mother with some bubbly, I said, “Your father’s a bit easier to be around.”

“He has his moments,” Chase said. “Hey, sorry about my mother. She can be a bit critical.”

“I don’t think she liked me.”

“My mother doesn’t like many people. Hell, I don’t even think she likes me.” He chuckled.

I frowned at that rather sad admission. “You’re serious?”

Chase shrugged. “Maybe or maybe not. She’s not easy to please. According to my mother, everything’s better in Italy.”

“Even sons?”

He laughed. “From what I gather, Italian sons have a tendency to live at home until they marry, so maybe in her eyes Italian boys make better sons.”

“She doesn’t like you living away from home?” I asked, thinking of how reversed our lives were, considering I still lived with my mother.

“To be honest, I have no idea. All I know is that my mother has missed her homeland for as long as I can remember.”

“Why doesn’t she visit?” I asked.

“They often go to Europe. But now, she’s convinced my dad to move to Milan. That’s why he’s got me working up a sweat in the family firm.”

“Are you happy doing that?” I asked, realizing we didn’t actually talk much about our careers.

“I’d like to set up my own business. You know I spoke about that before.”

“Oh, your luxury hotel destination,” I said.

He nodded, taking my hand, and his eyes lit up with mischief again. This man could not stay serious for long. “I can still taste your pussy on my tongue.”

I rolled my eyes. “One second of normal talk, and here we are talking about sex again.”

He tilted his head. “You don’t like that?”

As I regarded his bedroom eyes, chiseled jaw, and erotic lips, I nodded slowly and had to smile at his rather clownish expression. Chase amused me too, especially with that gentle wave of untamable dark hair, tousled from my fingers while he’d lapped at my clit.

“Let’s dance,” he said.

In a happy trancelike state, I floated by his side into the beautiful ballroom where a DJ had taken over from the band.

Freeform was more my style of dancing, and I gyrated my hips and waved my arms up in the air, wearing a goofy smile.
