“He couldn’t have been that bad.”

Am I defending Chase?

“He was bad, all right.” His eyes darkened. “I found him in bed with the love of my life.”

What?

He smiled crookedly at my shocked frown.

“But hey, I’ve moved on,” he reassured me. “I can’t trust him, though. Never will.”

If I needed any further reason to hate Chase, there it was.

After a little more chatting, I started to warm to Jack. He proved to be an interesting person, and we had our resentment toward Chase in common. I almost suggested setting up a dart board with my former lover’s face on it.

“I’m thinking of going to Rouge,” I said, feeling tipsy. “I told my friends I’d meet them there.”

“That’s in Soho, isn’t it?”

I nodded. “I like the décor, and they play sassy music, and we like to dance.”

He studied me for a minute. “Like strip, you mean?”

“Nope. It’s never that far. Just a little playful lip-syncing and hip swaying.”

“Sounds enticing. I’d like to go. That’s if you’d like me to escort you.”

He sounded so formal, but at least I hadn’t thought about Chase for an hour.
