“This is so fucking exciting. A ball gown?” she asked.

“And one for you too. Declan insisted I spend up big. And not to forget you. He likes you, and he knows that you’re my sister.”

Her mouth trembled as she hugged me. I thought she was going to cry.

“Let’s have a quick coffee and work out what we’re going to buy. You’ve got that appointment for your hair later.”

After that we went shopping, and I bought myself jeans, shirts, a couple of dresses, and shoes. The same for Lucy, who just couldn’t stop smiling.

“I’m exhausted.” I leaned against a wall as people bustled by. “I don’t get the allure of shopping.”

Lucy shook her head. “I’m in heaven. I could do this forever. I’ve never had so much fun.”

“The ball gown will have to wait,” I said, considering Declan’s offer of a stylist, who would probably have a better idea of how to kit me out for one of their posh events.

As much as I loved clothes like any young woman might, I’d never invested time and effort into thinking about them, so now that I found myself in this novel situation, I needed help and guidance.

I texted Declan. “When is this ball?”

He answered straight away. “In a week’s time.”

“I’ve got shopping exhaustion. I might take you up on that stylist.”

“Anything for you, angel. Just get your pretty bottom back to Bridesmere. I’m determined never to spend another night without you.”

“My arse doesn’t want to spend another night without you either.”

“You’ve made me hard again. Today was only a taste.”

My mouth stretched the width of my face. “Then tomorrow I’ll make sure to whip up a nice sauce to go with the main meal.”

“We are talking about fucking?” he asked.

“Yeah. What else?” I laughed.

“I love you Theadora Hart.”

“And I love you, Declan Lovechilde.”

On that closing note, a tear trickled down my cheek again.

I’d never told anyone before in my life, other than Lucy, that I loved them.

This was big. This was real. This was scary.
