“Well, technically, I’m set to inherit a fortune. But even that comes with a caveat. And she wants much more than the house.”

He reversed the car then swung it around, and we headed down the steep hill onto the highway.

“Let’s not talk about her anymore today,” he said, giving me a tight smile.

“Caveat” rang in my head, as did the word “blood.” Although curiosity had taken a grip of my senses, I let it go for the moment. The last thing Lachlan needed was an inquisition.

When we arrived at the hospital, he said, “I’ve got that gig tonight, which will be my last. I wish I could cancel, but I’d be letting the guys down. I promised.”

“I don’t have to hang around,” I said, though I hoped he would drag me along if only to keep him away from all the girls.

“No. I want you with me this weekend. Is that okay?” He stared into my eyes, and I asked myself how I’d ended up with someone so handsome. Lachlan must have been the only person I knew who looked sexier when angsty.

“You can stay at the penthouse if you like. Or you can come along. I just want to sleep with you in my arms.”

“I’d like that.” I returned his tender smile.

He kissed me on the cheek. “It shouldn’t take too long. He doesn’t have a lot of energy for conversation, I’m afraid.”

I settled down in a chair in the waiting area. “I’m fine. I need to call my mom and Harriet, anyway.”

I watched him stride off and wiped my brow. Being with him was definitely an emotional roller coaster ride.
