I turned to her and cracked a faint smile. “Thanks.”

Half an hour later, we walked up the stairs to my mother’s studio and found a crowd of people milling around in the foyer, drinking sangria and chomping on snacks. My mother floated about, chatting and kissing newcomers’ cheeks.

She saw me, and her face lit up. “This is a first.” She hugged me then, noticing Miranda by my side, kissed her. “It’s so nice to see you too. Little Ava’s a star. You just wait. Her mother’s here somewhere.”

“That’s good,” Miranda said. “Are you dancing too?”

My mother smiled at me. “Maybe a small piece. Just to show the families that the teacher knows what she’s doing.” She laughed.

“Something tells me they already know that, Mom,”

We entered the studio and took our seats, and Harriet joined us.

She hugged Miranda then turned to me. “Good to see you, Lachlan. Your little brother’s gorgeous. He’s made quite an impression on Ava. They’re kind of inseparable. It’s cute.”

I returned a faint smile, which quickly faded. “I hear you’re working at the hospital. Any news on Ollie? He won’t see anyone.”

“Tell me about it.” Harriet sighed. “I’ve seen him. He refuses to recognize me, but I check on him and give him his meds. He won’t let me wash him. The older nurse does that. It’s strange. I don’t know whether he’s blocking me out on purpose or he’s plain forgotten who I am.”

“That’s sad.” I shook my head. “Is there any hope? Can he get his legs moving again?”

“In quite a few cases, if its nerve damage, it can heal within six months. A lot of it depends on him. At first, he showed absolutely no interest in rehab. But I’m glad to report he’s finally agreed to talk to the physio. That’s something.”

“Thanks for the update,” I said.

Although unsure of how I felt about Harriet becoming Ollie’s nurse, I could see she meant well.

The show started, and the children were sweet. My mom was right—Manuel was a natural, as was Ava.

Miranda turned to me and shook her head in amazement. It felt heartwarming to see young, spirited kids with a ton of talent, and Manuel had a dancer’s instinct. It especially showed in his posture and the fire in his eyes when he danced.
