“And he doesn’t remember you?”

“Mm… I notice him stealing a glance here and there.” She took a drag on her cigarette. “Anyway… it’s a great job. I love it. Even without him being there.”

“I’ve got an issue or two myself,” I said.

I told her about the conversation I’d overheard at the estate.

“Shit, that sounds like a murder investigation.”

“That’s a tad dramatic, Harry,” I said.

“Hello… Blood on a T-shirt. You have to talk to him. You seem very close. And he’s into you, Andie.”

“You think so?”

She nodded. “You bet. He can’t take his eyes off you. Even when he’s banging those drums and the chicks are circling.”

“Tell me about it. That’s why I’m here. It’s his last gig.”

“I hope I see Orlando playing again. He’s so fucking talented.”

“Does he have his guitar at the hospital?”

“His dad brought it in, but Ollie refused to look at it. He hardly said a word to his father. It was heartbreaking. God, his father’s fucking gorgeous too. And you should see the mother, Clarissa. She’s stunning. No wonder Ollie’s hot.” She stamped out her cigarette. “They’re broken. It’s so sad.”

“I bet they are. Come on. Let’s go back in.”

After we’d danced to the point of exhaustion, Harriet struck up a conversation with a guy. I left them alone and headed to the bar, where a guy came up and started talking to me. Although he seemed nice enough, I declined his offer to buy me a drink, mainly because I didn’t want to give him the wrong idea.

“I haven’t seen you here before,” he said.

“A friend of mine’s in the band.”

“Oh? Who’s that?”

“The drummer.”

His eyebrows shot up. “You know Lachlan Peace?”

“You look surprised,” I said.

“He’s not boyfriend material, you know.”

“Why would you say that?” I studied him closely. His eyes darted about, as though he was looking for someone. “Let’s just say he stole my wife.”

“What?”

“Uh-huh. She went to one of his gigs. He fucked her, and after that, she left me.”

“Oh, I’m sorry to hear that.” My heart sank to my feet.

His expression had gone dark, and his voice had an edge to it. “The name’s Mike.” He held out his hand.

I took it, even though I didn’t want to.

“Um… I guess I should be getting back,” I said.

“You didn’t give me your name.” His creepy dark eyes had a sinister glow that I’d only just noticed.
