“I’d love to see your designs,” Miranda said.

“I have a store up the road. Drop by. I’ll give you a card.”

Leaving Miranda to chat with the girls, I headed over to Ollie, who was talking to Harriet.

Harriet smiled up at me. “Hey, future brother-in-law.”

Maybe I should have told her to slow down, but the idea of marrying Miranda didn’t seem to freak me out. It actually had a nice ring to it.

“So you got the gig,” I said.

“I did.”

When I heard that the Thornhills had hired her to be Ollie’s house nurse, I thought I should tell Aidan that Harriet and his son had shared a short history. But Miranda stopped me, saying that it would only complicate matters.

Ollie appeared the happiest I’d seen him since the accident, and perhaps having Harriet there was a good thing after all.

After Ollie had wheeled over to the table for a snack, Harriet continued. “I don’t know why he asked for me. He was rude and impossible at the hospital. But I got a call from his mom, asking if I’d look after him at home. The pay’s amazing. And to be honest…” She placed a hand at the side of her mouth and whispered, “It’s dead easy. The food’s out of this world, and I’ve even managed to convince him to play his guitar again.”

“Now, that’s great news,” I said.

Ollie joined us again, and I patted him on the arm. “Hey, rock star. Harriet tells me you’ve been playing again.”

He took a swig of his beer, and his eyes had an unmistakable shine. Seeing him smile again made my heart sing, and if beer was responsible, then it was as medicinal as some claimed.

“I’ve stopped feeling sorry for myself. Although I have my moments.”

“Tell me about it. The mornings are the worst.” Harriet rolled her eyes.

He smiled, and they shared lingering gazes, which made me wonder about their relationship.

Aidan joined us. “When are we going to see you at the Red House?”

“This week,” I said. “I’ve had so much going on. Remember I told you about that art dealer?”

“Sure do. It was a fucking horror story. Clarissa freaked when I told her. She knew that fucker in college.”

“She’ll be interested to learn that he’s hiding in Berlin.”

“How did they find him?” Aidan asked.

“The insurance company sent in the investigators.”

“Where’s the art?”

“Apparently, it was sitting in a vault, about to pass hands. Great timing.”

“That’s a stroke of luck.”

“I guess. It’s been pretty fucking stressful.”

“What are you going to do with them?” he asked.

“I’m going to keep them. I’ve paid all my dad’s debts, but I’m a bit low in cash, so I might have to sell one to get a few projects off the ground.”

“Well, I can help. If ever you need a loan…”

“Thanks, buddy, but I’ll manage.” I patted him on the arm. “Say, Ollie’s looking good.”
