Jace chuckled, embarrassed by the question and his paltry answer. “Not a lot. Like 110. If I lifted more often, it would be much higher.”

“Did you at any time that night see Nyleah go outside?”

Will finally spoke. “You said ‘one more question’, and then you asked a whole series of other questions.”

Webb laughed. “You’re right. Please forgive me. Jace, did you at any time see Nyleah go outside?”

“No. Wait…I mean yes. She went outside to smoke with the security guy. Demetrius Something.”

“And where were you when Nyleah was found?”

Jace looked at his father, then at Will, but there was no help to be found in either man’s face. They both stared blankly, although Bobby’s eyes narrowed slightly, a sign Jace couldn’t read. He turned back to face the detective and shook his head. “I think I was talking to the DJ. Yeah, that’s where I was. I remember now.”

“Uh-huh. And when I follow up with this guy, he’ll back you up?”

“Yes.”

“Do you have a dog?”

“Yeah, we have a Frenchie.”

“What color?”

“Tan.”

He was writing. “One more question. For real this time. Did you at any time have a falling out with Nyleah?”

“Falling out?”

“Yeah. Did y’all ever get into an argument or disagreement about anything?”

“No.”

Webb stared at Jace without blinking. If he was trying to intimidate him, it worked. “And you never bothered her? Hit on her? Pressured her?”

“No. I never did any of that.”

“Why would her mother say you did?”

Jace's heart began to plound. “I honestly have no idea. She said that?”

“Nyleah said that. Her mother relayed it to me.”

Jace frowned and stared down at the table, trying to make sense of the nonsensical. “I swear, Officer. On everything. I don’t know what you’re talking about. Me and Nyleah didn’t even talk outside of band and the Twelve meetings. I liked her at first, but she wasn’t feeling me like that. I was cool with that. I have a girlfriend. Her name is Reagan. I swear!”

By the time he was done speaking, he was almost hyperventilating. He looked around for sympathy, but no one had any to spare.

Ebony and Ivory seemed especially unmoved. “Okay. Thank you, gentlemen. That’s all for today,” Webb said dismissively. Will and Bobby both stood, but Jace was stuck in his seat, still worried, still stunned by the turn of events.

“What exactly did Nyleah say about me?” he said.

Will touched his shoulder. “We can get into that another time, Jace.”

“No, I wanna know.”

Webb smiled like a hunter who had spotted his prey. “We’ll speak again soon. I promise.”

Once the Gordons and their attorney were gone, Webb dropped his notepad on his desk and turned to his partner. “I don’t like him,” he said.
