“I wanted to ask you something.”

She raised her eyebrows.

“Can I take you to homecoming?”

“I wasn’t planning on going, actually.”

He tried not to show his disappointment. “Yeah. That doesn’t really seem like you. It’s all good.”

“I wasn’t finished. I wasn’t planning to go, but I do wanna go with you. So yes.”

They sealed it with a kiss, and then Bakari got the hell out of there before his hormones overrode his self-control. As he drove away, he mentally patted himself on the back. What he had just done was just as hard as what he did on the field every Friday. The discipline. The dedication. The willpower.

He was finally using his head.

CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

“Doyougentlemenhavechildren?”

Webb and Ackerman looked at each other. They had both seemed perplexed since the moment Danielle Baptiste twirled through the door of the conference room. “I think we wanna keep this interview about you,” Webb explained.

“I’m not flirting with you,” Danielle said before laughing at them. “I’m just getting a vibe, that’s all.”

“Okay, I’ll bite,” Webb said. “What’s the vibe?”

“It’s a fatherly vibe, sort of protective. It’s not a bad thing.”

“If you say so. Can we begin?”

Danielle took a deep breath and let out a leisurely sigh. “We can.”

Ackerman snickered while his partner picked up his pen and pad. Danielle knew he was laughing at her, but she didn’t care. She’d heard worse.

“How did you know the victim?”

“We were soulmates.”

His head snapped up. “Oh, were you romantically involved?” he asked as he shot a glance at her mother. Pam looked on with the same expression she always had. Her lips were pursed, and her eyebrows were crooked as if to let the detective know she’d been dealing with her daughter’s bullshit all her life.

“Oh no, I like boys,” Danielle said. “I meant we were soulmates as friends. We were kindred spirits. And it’s interesting, because we actually didn’t have a lot in common. She was more into earthly pursuits. I lean toward the spiritual.”

“So would you say—”

“And that’s not to say that earthly pursuits are worthless or meaningless," she continued. "There are some earthly things, and people, that are very meaningful to me.”

“Great. Good for you,” Webb said with no enthusiasm whatsoever. “So she was your best friend?”

Danielle thought for a moment. “I think it’s safe to say that, yes.”

Webb looked at the lawyer. Will shrugged. He probably didn’t know what to make of her, either. And Danielle didn’t mind. She liked to keep people guessing.

“Did you spend any time with Nyleah at the party?” Webb asked.

“I spent lots of time with her. In fact—”

“You can just answer yes or no if it’s a yes or no question.”

“Okay, yes,” she said. This guy was clinched tight. “Are you a Virgo?”
