Tears filled Jace’s eyes as he realized what he was dealing with. “Did she really kill herself? Tell me the truth!” His hand was starting to shake, but he kept the gun pointed at his father.

“She’s dead, Jace. Why does it matter now?”

“Because I need to know.”

“Listen. I got you a good lawyer. The best my money can buy. Okay? And we’re gonna get you out of this. You think I would let my son go to jail for something he didn’t do?”

Jace’s arm trembled as the weight of the gun began to strain his muscles. He could put the gun back, and they could hug it out and pretend nothing ever happened. He could let the lawyer get him off and let everything go back to normal. But deep down, something deep in his soul was pulling him under, and he knew he would never be okay again.

He lost track of time. All he could think about was that his life was over. There was no coming back from this. For either of them.

“Dad?”

“Yes, son.”

“I can’t take it. I can’t.” He broke down and sobbed.

Bobby’s eyes widened in fear. “Jace, please don’t do this. We can work this all out, okay? Put the gun down. I’m sorry, Jace, I’m so sorry.”

How often does a person get to hear another human being beg for his life? The sound exhilarated Jace. It was music.

Before he could tell his father what was going to happen, he heard sirens wailing in the distance, then closer, and closer. He glanced toward the hallway and realized he didn’t hear the shower running anymore.

“Listen to me, Jace. Put the gun down. The police don’t have to know anything. Okay? I won’t tell them what you did.”

“What about whatyoudid?” he wailed.

Bobby’s eyes narrowed. “I’m trying to help you right now. You’re my son. Let’s just stop with the gun and work this out. Please, Jace. I’m begging you.”

Jace shook his head, and Bobby seemed to deflate before his eyes. He thought he was a dead man. It was the first time Jace had seen him actually feel something in a long time. He smiled at his father, just for a brief moment, before he put the gun to his temple and pulled the trigger.

CHAPTER FORTY-SEVEN

Theparty

Her:I wanted to c u b4 I leave. Imma be gone the wholllllle summer

Him:I told you I have a gig tonight. But take care of my little one

Her:Im so drunk rn

Him:Excuse me? Call me NOW!

Her:Cant. Music 2 loud

Him:Nyleah wtf is wrong with you? Call me now bitch or its over!!!

Despite her inebriated state, Nyleah saw things perfectly clearly. Her eyes filled with tears as she contemplated her situation. She was already heartbroken over having to be apart from him all summer, but to make matters even worse, now he was angry with her.

Rob—she was the only one who called him that—was the love of her life. It was probably a silly thought, but she actually saw herself marrying him one day. Okay, yeah, he was already married, but that was just on paper. He told her a million times that they didn't fuck anymore, and she believed him.

Although…he had lied to her before. When he finally admitted to messing around with Avianna, she went HAM. Almost beat her ass. But Rob had fixed that, and Avianna was out of the picture now. All the other girls were. All he had to do was get a divorce, and he would be hers.

Nobody else knew. And why should they? All these stupid ass arbitrary rules were keeping them from being together. But she was almost eighteen. That's when he would leave Debra for her. She'd be out of school and he'd be single. She just had to keep him happy until the end of the year.

She loved him. She loved him so much it hurt. And up until two minutes ago, he had felt the same. But he had called her out of her name, something he had never done before. Ever. And she had driven him to that point.

Why did I tell him I was drunk?
