“You still drunk?” he asked.

Nyleah frowned. “Does it matter?”

“Uh, yeah.”

Oh, right. That stupid consent class they had all taken a few years back. She smiled. “Ok fine. I’m tipsy, but I’m not drunk.”

He stared into her eyes as if he could gauge her level of inebriation through her corneas. He must have felt reassured, because he leaned forward and kissed her.

She kissed him back, and hands were everywhere. It wasn’t altogether unpleasant, if she was being honest. And as Jace’s hands roamed her body, she found herself leaning into him and melting.

She pulled away and lifted her dress over her head, and he took that as the permission she intended it to be and unbuttoned his pants. He took his own shirt off and paused. “I don’t have a condom."

“It’s okay. I have that shot thing.”

He frowned at her. “You sure?”

“I’m positive. Don’t pull out.”

“And neither of us has any diseases?” he asked with what seemed to her to be forced playfulness.

“I’m clean.”

“Yeah, me too.”

“So…” she trailed off. “You won’t pull out, right?”

He stood and finished undressing, the perfect answer to her strange question.

When they were done, he dressed before she did. As she lay there on the grey couch covered with her own dress, she watched him tie his shoes and wondered if it was the liquor or the boy who had her so relaxed.

He looked at her and smiled. “Where did all that come from?”

“What do you mean?” she asked sweetly.

“I know you’ve noticed me trying to get at you all year, but you never gave me any signals that you were interested.”

Nyleah shrugged. “You were looking good tonight.”

He twisted his lips in disbelief. “I’m supposed to believe that?”

“Believe what you want, but I think you just got all the proof you need.”

“True.”

He sat back against the cushion and checked his phone. “Go ahead and put your number in here,” he instructed, handing her the device.

She was taken aback. She hadn’t thought this far ahead, and she hadn’t expected him to want this to go any further than five minutes ago. Nevertheless, she obliged, despite her discomfort. She would be out of town all summer anyway. She didn’t have to see him again if she didn’t want to. And she really didn’t.

“Did you wanna go and get cleaned up? There’s a bathroom next door.”

She waved a hand. “I’m good. Just worn out.”

That got a smirk out of him. He was so proud. “So what now? We just go down and act like nothing happened?”

She searched for an answer. What would people say when they saw them come back downstairs together? They could stagger their exits. But what if he told someone? She really didn’t know him well enough to speak to his trustworthiness. And he was a teenage boy, of all the things. But as she studied his face, she felt at ease. He seemed like someone who would keep his mouth shut.

Before she could say anything else, she heard footsteps, only they weren’t coming from the hallway. They were coming from outside.
