“So, everybody’s happy?”

“Oh yes. I’m deliriously happy. Can’t you tell?”

She laughs.

“Oh and you know what Bronwyn did this morning?”

I’m sure I can hear Katie sigh but I don’t care. “Tell me what Bronwyn did this morning,” she says.

“She made breakfast for Charlie. You know what she made?”

“No?”

“She made pancakes.”

“And?”

“With maple syrup, vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce.”

“And?”

“And she had them too, although only a teaspoon’s worth, she wouldn’t want to upset that waistline. So did Jack, a gallon’s worth. I was there, I watched it all. While sipping on my coffee.”

“And she didn’t make any for you? Is that it?”

“I was going to work, I didn’t want any. Don’t you get it?”

“No?”

“She’s strictly vegan-sugar-free-gluten-free-dairy-free, remember? I asked Jack about it on the way out, and he said apparently her condition cleared up so she can go back to her normal diet now.”

I didn’t say anything, just watched him with my jaw half on the floor. He shrugged and I made myself let it go.Let it go,I told myself, then I told myself again, like a mantra,Let it go.“I’ve been cooking vegan dishes for days, can you believe it?”

“I told you she was messing with you,” Katie says.

I sigh. “I know.”

“You want to come out for a drink later?”

I hesitate. “It’s tempting, but I think I should be home.”

“Why? It’s Friday night, Bronwyn’s there, you may as well make the most of it.”

“I just feel like I should be there.”

“Suit yourself,” she says.

If I’d been smart, I would have taken her up on it. Instead, I go home and find that Bronwyn and Charlie have gone out.

“How was Charlie today?” I ask Jack in the kitchen. He’s leaning against the counter, drinking a beer from the bottle, scrolling his phone. He shaved this morning, I note, and part of me is glad we’re moving on from the beer-drinking, tracksuit-wearing, couch-lying look. Part of me is deliriously happy he’s looking more like his old self. But another, tiny, barely-worth-mentioning part of me, wonders if this change is for Bronwyn.

“Charlie was perfectly fine.”

“Oh, good.”

“She was happy.”
