“I can’t hurt either of you more than I already have,” I confess.

She hops up and storms away from the couch. The warmth of her body is replaced with the cold night air and my heart jumps into my throat.

“But can’t you see, Styx. You’re doing that every day. Every day I wake up remembering all those promises you made me, remember how we were together, and then it’s all ripped away once again when your words float through my head when you told me you changed your mind, that I wasn’t good enough.”

“You are good enough, that’s not—”

“So prove it. Stop backtracking. Stop worrying about what everyone else thinks but the two people who are involved.” She throws her hands up in frustration.

I take a step closer, the air between us crackling.

This isn’t what you came here for, Stygian.

This isn’t what you—

“I won’t survive it again if you turn your back on me,” she warns as I trail my fingers up her arm and push her hair over her shoulder.

“Kitty Kat,” I breathe.

“I’m serious, Styx. I need this. I need you. And if you can’t, then you need to leave right now.”

I step into her body, her breasts brush against my chest causing her to gasp and need to surge through my body.

“I can’t, Kat,” I confess. “I can’t walk away from you.”

“B-but—”

My lips are on hers before I’ve even registered the move. Her entire body locks up as my lips brush against hers.

“Kat,” I growl, terrified that she’s about to call me out on all my bullshit noble intentions and pull the rug from beneath me.

“You don’t want me, remember,” she says coldly, her lips brushing against mine with every word.

“Fuck, Kat. You are the only thing I want,” I admit, my voice deep and rough with honesty and need.

I brush my lips against hers again before sucking her bottom one into my mouth and nipping enough to send a bolt of shock through her.

It’s a move that has the exact reaction I was hoping for because, in less than a heartbeat, she falls into me, her arms looping around my neck, her lips parting to deepen the kiss that I’m dying without.

My fingers thread into her hair so I can tilt her head exactly how I want it so that I can lick into her mouth and take everything I’ve been craving since I made all those promises to her about wanting her in my future.

Before I made a promise to D to—

“Don’t,” she growls when my movements falter at that thought. “Whatever you’re thinking about, stop it right now.”

Her hands slide up my chest until she’s pushing me back toward the couch.

“I— is everyone asleep?” I ask, my eyes not moving from hers as I allow her to direct me.

“Yeah.”

The second my calves hit the edge of the couch, I fall back, reaching out to ensure she comes with me.

“Hey,” she whispers, pulling back to look at me.

“Hey, Kitty Kat.”

“I hate you for what you did.”
