Not bothering to open this message so she can’t see I’ve read it, instead, I open my chat with Ryder.

Styx: What are you doing with my girl? Where are you?

My free hand curls into a fist when it just joins the other unread messages in the thread.

Trying a different tact, I pull up my conversation with Kat.

Styx: Have you had a good day, Kitty Kat? I can’t stop thinking about you.

“Motherfucker,” I grunt when it doesn’t even get delivered.

Grabbing my bag from my locker, I find the lunch I threw inside before I left my place this morning and fall into a chair.

The second I put my cell on the table, it starts dancing across the top with another call from her.

I want to cancel it, but then she’ll know she’s getting to me.

So instead, I wait for it to ring off, and then I call the person who needs to know about this.

For once, I need to do the right fucking thing.

“Styx, is everything okay?” D asks the second he answers my call.

“Yeah, man. I’m just at work.”

“Okay, so Kat’s—”

“Kat’s fine,” I force out, knowing full well that Ryder is probably taking very good care of her right this second. “It’s… uh… something else, actually.”

“Right, well spit it out. I need to get this car running in the next twenty minutes and it’s beyond fucked.”

“Uh… yeah… Have you… uh…”

“Fucking hell, man. I haven’t got time for this shit.”

“Faith called me,” I blurt.

The line goes deathly silent. To the point that I pull my cell from my ear to check if it’s still connected.

“D, you still there, man?”

“Y-yeah,” he grunts, anger deepening his voice. “What did she want?”

“I didn’t fucking answer. Fuck that, man. But she’s messaged saying she needs help and that she’s desperate.”

“I’m gutted for her,” he spits, “couldn’t happen to a nicer person.”

“You don’t even know what’s wrong. It could be serious.”

“Fuck off, Styx. She’s nothing more than a vindictive bitch. She’ll have an angle, I thought you of all people would know that.”

“Y-yeah, I do. I just—”

“She’s playing you. Just fucking ignore her. Change your number if you have to. Do not let that poisonous cunt back into our lives.”

“So she hasn’t called you?”

“No, clearly she doesn’t have a death wish, because I swear to God, Styx. If I so much as lay eyes on her, I will fucking kill her.”
