I try to think of things that put me in that kind of mood or things that upset me in the past. When my dad comes to mind, I pause, knowing that’s exactly what I’m looking for.

It might not be a sexual relationship I’m jealous of, as is the vibe you get with the song, but it’s definitely an emotional one.

My dad left my mom when he didn’t want to have me. A few years ago, he met someone who was quick to get pregnant, and I have a sister I barely know, who lives five hours away. To say I’m jealous of that little girl is an understatement. She has my dad, and it’s unfair that I never did.

Just like the song suggests, I have a girl crush on her.

I close my eyes again and rub my lips together as I sway to the lyrics in my head, getting ready to really show these guys what I can do.

“I’d say she’s ready,” Nate says.

I open my eyes and grin his way. “I love the way you guys are reading my cues.” I take another breath. “Okay, let’s do this.”

Trent starts the chords just like the last song, but this one is much slower as I begin, “I’ve got a girl crush. Hate to admit it.”

I try not to look at the other guys as I sing with all my heart and really feel the slowness of the song by not rushing it.

I get to the part where the rest of the band joins in with, “Taste her lips,” and a rush races through me when each of the guys sings it perfectly.

Tears come to my eyes as I continue the song, letting all of my emotions—from this moment, from never having my dad around, and from how promising my future feels now—wash over me.

By the end of the song, I can barely finish, as I can’t stop the tears from falling. I cover my eyes and take a minute to myself.

Nate comes up and places his hand on my back. “That was truly amazing.”

I look up at him and grin as I wipe my eyes. “I felt it too. I’m sorry. It was just … just …”

“Stunning,” Cole’s mom says from behind me.

I flip around quickly to see her standing at the door.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to intrude, but I heard you and just had to come listen,” she says. “You guys …” She pauses, and I can see the pride she feels when she looks at her son and then at the rest of us. “That was absolutely beautiful.” She places her hand on her chest. “I’m so proud of you all.”

I barely know the woman, but I still run to her and wrap my arms around her, needing to feel a hug of a parent figure wrapped around me.

“Oh, sweetie,” she says as she pats my hair down. “Your voice is angelic. I can’t wait for everyone else to hear you too.”

I stand back and wipe my eyes again. “Thank you.”

“No, thank you. I’m excited Cole gets to be a part of this.” She looks to the guys. “You all should be very proud. I know, if you’ve practiced as hard as Cole, it’s a great feeling to see something like this come to life.”

“Yes, ma’am,” Nate says, and I smile at his manners.

These are really good guys, and if we can vibe together this well, this fast, we truly do have something special here.

CHAPTERNINE

Matthew

I smile when I see Hannah’s name flash across my screen with her beautiful green eyes. “Hey there,” I answer the FaceTime call, looking right at her gorgeous face and not just a picture.

“Matthew!” she screams out loud, bouncing around so much that the screen is all jumbled.

“What?” I match her enthusiasm with my tone.

She opens the door to a truck and hops in. For a second, I squint my eyes, wondering where she is, then remember Nate gave her a ride to Cole’s house today.

“We just had our first band practice,” she squeals with delight.
