“Really?” She jumps with glee.

I hold my arms around her tighter. “And I get to call her my girlfriend too. We’re going to be the power couple here in a few months.”

She turns to face me with a laugh. “Did you really just saypower couple?”

I give her a quick kiss, then grin as I say, “I sure did.”

She bites her lips playfully before leaning in and resting her head on my chest. I feel her sigh, so I dip my hands into her back pockets and hold her against me. I know she’s nervous about all of this, but it’s exciting, and I want her to know I’ll be there, cheering her on, just like she has always done for me.

CHAPTERTEN

Hannah

I sleep in on our first day of winter break and enjoy every second of it. Before I went to bed, I even turned off my ringer and put my phone on the floor, so I wouldn’t hear a thing. I have no problems with school. I just wish I could sleep in more every day, so when I get the chance, I take full advantage.

As I stretch my legs and arms, I flip over to see a note from my mom sitting on my desk with a muffin. I reach over and grab it off the counter, flipping it open to read it.

Morning, sweetheart

I didn’t want to wake you but wanted to make sure you got something for breakfast. I have to work a double today, so I’ll be at the market if you need me.

Love you,

Mom

I smile and set the note down, then grab a bite of the banana nut muffin, which melts in my mouth. It’s so good. Lying there a few minutes longer, I hear my phone buzz and finally decide to truly get out of bed and bend down to retrieve it from the floor.

To my surprise, I have a ton of messages, and as I hold it, they just keep going off.

I slide my phone on and notice it’s all from the group text with the guys from the band. I’m not sure what’s going on, so I scroll to the top, and when I read it, I scream out in shock even though I’m totally home alone.

The first text is from Trent, who says he got us our first gig.

I blink so many times, thinking it’s a dream or wondering if I read it wrong, but no. He got us a gig, and there, on the screen, are the other guys seemingly just as elated as I am but wondering why I’m not responding.

I don’t bother with a text, and instead, I FaceTime them all.

“There you are!” Nate yells, the first person to answer.

“Is this really happening?” I blurt out.

He laughs just as Cole joins us. “Hell yes, it is. Trent is the fucking man right now.”

Trent clicks on the call just in time to hear his name. “Yes, you all can thank meafterwe perform because until then, we have some work to do.”

“When is it?” I ask, not sure if I should throw up from nerves or excitement.

“New Year’s Eve. The bar in Rebel River was looking for an opening act. I had told the guy who taught me guitar that we were doing this, and they invited us to join them. That is, after they heard who our singer was, saying they saw you at the tree lighting.”

All the guys hoot and holler, and I feel the blush rise up my face. I cover my mouth even though I know it’s extremely obvious by how red my face must be.

“We havea lotof work to do though. We need to have, at least, a half-hour set. And we have two weeks to get our shit together.”

“I can’t believe they would take us, knowing we’ve only had one band practice together,” I say, still in absolute disbelief and shock over it all.

“Well, fuck, they don’t know that,” Trent says. “I might have lied a bit, but it got us the gig, so don’t fuck it up.”

“Trent!” I yell, and he laughs.
