He shrugs and gets up to see who’s here, so I follow him after making sure Justine is able to get up on her own.

I can hear a woman talking to Tucker, but when I turn the corner and see Melody Miles standing in his living room, my jaw about hits the floor.

She’s a huge country singer with three top hits in the charts, and she’s standing five feet away from me, here in Mason Creek.

My surprise must catch her attention because she glances over Tucker’s shoulder and smiles as she waves, saying, “You must be Hannah Murphy.”

My eyes race from Matthew to Tucker and back to her. “Melody Miles?”

She laughs. “In the flesh.” She opens her arms out wide.

“But … why are you here? In Mason Creek?” I stumble over my words.

Tucker answers for her, “You know the Fratellis? Enzo is her head of security, and they thought Mason Creek would be a good place for her to unwind and take a break from the spotlight for a bit.”

“Well, you sure came to the right sleepy town for that,” I say with a laugh.

“You must be Justine,” Melody says, handing her a bouquet of flowers. “It’s so nice to finally meet you. Tucker talks about you all the time.”

“These are lovely.” Justine sniffs the flowers. “It’s so good to meet you too.”

“And this is my son, Matthew.” Tucker points to Matthew.

“Ah, yes, the baseball star.” Melody smiles as they shake hands.

“Here, come join us.” Tucker motions for us all to go back to the dining room, where we were sitting before she arrived.

Once we’re all seated, Matthew offers to get her a drink, and she turns to me. “So, Tucker and I worked on a song the other day, and he told me all about you.”

I instantly look up to Tucker, then back to Melody, shocked. “He did?”

They both laugh.

“Yes, I did. Don’t sound so surprised,” Tucker says.

“Sorry, but, um, she’s Melody Miles. I’m still a little weirded out that we’re sitting with her right now,” I admit, embarrassed.

“Don’t be.” She places her hand on the table. “I was just like you only a few years ago, trying to find my way into the music business.”

“And look at you now,” I say in awe.

She grins. “Look at me now, but don’t think it didn’t take years of hard work. There were a lot of shows I played where I was a nobody. I hear you’re already making quite the name for yourself.”

“Yeah, up here, away from anybody who really matters. I feel like we need to move to Nashville if we really want to try for this.”

“Nashville definitely helps, but what you’re doing is good. Build yourself a name, so when you go to book gigs, they can call here for a reference. If some bigger places vouch for you, then you’ll get booked faster.”

I nod my head. “I never thought about that.”

“Yep. Start collecting those contacts, girl. No matter how big or small, you never know who you might need to call for a favor someday.” She nudges Tucker. “Plus, you got the best songwriter sittin’ right here.”

Tucker grins and raises his eyebrows. “Yeah, but I only know the songwriting side. I’ve never tried to get my band signed. That’s where I thought you could come in.”

“Sure, I can introduce Hannah to the right people. I’ve heard your voice is pure magic. If so, all you need is an introduction. Your voice will do the rest.”

“Are you being serious right now?” I slap my hands on the table a little too excitedly.

“Sweetheart, if Tucker says you’re good, then I’m in. Us girls need to help each other out in this country music world.”
