Tucker sits next to Justine on the couch and places his hand on her knee. “Our first fire.”

She nestles into his side. “We’re going to have a ton of firsts in the home.”

“So, when do you find out what you’re having?” I ask pointing to where she’s rubbing her belly.

“Not for a little while longer.” She turns to Tucker. “I’d be happy with a girl or a boy. I’m not really rooting for either.”

“I want a little girl,” Tucker says with a grin.

“You’re in trouble if we have a girl. She’s going to have you so wrapped around her little finger.” Justine shakes her head, knowing it’s the truth.

He chuckles under his breath. “You’re probably right.”

I point at Tucker’s guitar sitting in the corner. “Was it hard to learn how to play?”

Tucker sits up and reaches for it. “Here, take it and hold it like this.” He shows me quickly, then hands it to me and crouches down in front of me. “Let me position your hands.”

I allow him to as he places my fingers on the first, second, and sixth strings.

“Like this?” I ask.

“Yep. Now, hold those down and strum with the other fingers.”

I do as he described once, then again.

He grabs my hand and shows me how to strum. “Move it up, then down—slowly at first, then go a little faster. So, it’s up … down … then up, down, up, down.”

I follow along, then smile with pride when I get the hang of it.

“That’s the G chord,” Tucker says. “That’s the main one you need to know.”

He shows me a few more chords, and I’m surprised when I am able to catch on pretty well.

“See, it’s not that hard,” Tucker says.

“How come you’ve never learned?” I turn to ask Matthew.

He shrugs. “He’s shown me a few times.”

“His passion is baseball, and that was obvious early on,” Tucker says. “I wasn’t going to push it on him. I’d be happy to teach you though if you want.”

“Yeah, I’d like that,” I respond genuinely. I’ve never thought about playing the guitar, but it does sound like fun.

CHAPTERTWO

Hannah

Later that night, we all head out to the old bridge. Legend says a man built it for his wife when they were just dating, so she could cross the river with ease. Now, it’s just a place where all us kids hang out.

Before we exit the truck, Matthew grabs my hand from across the bench seat, raising his eyebrows suggestively. “We could just stay in here all night. No one would know we’re missing.”

Just then, Scott, one of the guys, throws his body on the hood of his truck, so his face is a few inches from the window with his tongue out, yelling, “Ahhh.”

I giggle at him, then Matthew. “Fat chance.”

“Way to ruin my game,” Matthew says as he opens the door, yelling at Scott. “Get off my truck, fucker.”

Scott blows him off as he walks to my side of the truck. “You ain’t got no game, and we all know it. Besides, Hannah’s with us tonight.”
