“I’m not slowing down. Ahh!” she screams. “Hannah was on the radio!”

She dials the radio station, and a guy picks up on the second ring. “Nothing but Country. How can I help you?”

“The song you just played was the absolute best! Please play it again as soon as you can,” Leah says, beaming with pride.

“Yeah, you’re not the first call we’ve gotten, requesting that. Glad you liked it. Good to show some love to the hometown group. Where are you from?”

I laugh out loud and shout over her, so the guy can hear, “Mason Creek!”

“Oh, then they are legit hometown to you guys!”

“She’s my best friend!” Leah yells out, her eyes starting to brim with happy tears.

“Nice! We’ll definitely play it some more. Thanks for calling in,” he says.

“Thank you for playing it!” Leah says. She hangs up the phone and instantly dials Hannah.

I perk up when I see her name and hold my breath without even realizing it at first.

“OMG, you’re on the radio!” Leah screams when Hannah answers.

I can’t hear what Hannah says, but the way Leah jumps with glee in her seat puts a huge smile on my face.

“I was just walking into work when I heard the loudest music playing from some big ole truck, and the driver was honking like a maniac,” Leah tells her as she winks at me. “He’s super excited too.”

“So proud of you guys!” I yell out.

Leah looks at me, holding the phone away from her mouth slightly. “She says, ‘Thank you.’”

I grin, wanting this moment, this feeling, to last. Ever since the accident, it’s been hard to get this kind of rush. I honestly never thought I’d feel it again, yet here it is, more intense than ever.

“Okay, bye,” she says into the phone. “Love you!” She goes to hang up.

“Love,” I blurt out, then catch myself and feel stupid when I finish with, “the song.”

Leah eyes me, knowing that’s not what I was about to say, but I’m quick to put the truck in drive as my way of saying,Okay, time for you to get out.

“Eek!” she squeals again. “So exciting. Thanks for flagging me down.”

I nod with a cheesy grin. “I can’t believe she did it.”

She jumps down from my truck. “I can. I never had a doubt.” She reaches around to shut the door. “See you later.”

I wave my good-bye as I go on to my lesson. I hope I still get there before my player does.

Just as I’m about to close down, the barn door slides open.

“Hey, sorry, bro, no open hitting tonight,” I call out, not paying any attention to who it is. When I look up, I see Hannah standing in the doorway. “Oh. Hi.”

I put down the bucket of balls I was holding and head toward her.

“But I really need to practice, Coach,” she begs in a teasing manner.

I raise the nets, so I can get under them and walk toward her.

“Congratulations!” I wrap my arms around her in a big hug, hoping she’s okay with it.
