“Yet you came back.”

Now, it’s his turn to shrug. “My little sister’s here. She’s going to need her big brother to protect her.” He gives me a cheesy grin.

“When it comes to scaring off boys, I don’t think it’s the same when you’re old enough to be her dad.”

“Yeah, but she’s going to need someone to bitch to when it comes to our dad, and I want to be there when she does.” He chuckles. “That’s something I never got to do with anyone.”

“Like you’d ever complain about your dad. When it comes to dads, Tucker’s top notch.”

He shakes his head. “Yeah, I guess I’m pretty lucky.”

“He and Justine seem happy. I ran into her with Emily yesterday.” I nudge his shoulder playfully. “I can see why she has you wrapped around her finger.”

“Guilty. I’d do anything for that little girl.”

I laugh. “Oh, man. She’s going to be trouble.”

“Nah, I’m teaching her to be tough.” He looks at me. “Like you were.”

I chuckle to myself. “You know how many times I heard, ‘You’re like one of the guys’?”

“You were …” He pauses and tilts his head with a sexy grin. “Until you weren’t.”

I feel myself blush, remembering the night our friendship changed.

He moves his hand until he’s interlinking his finger with mine. I turn to meet his eyes and give him a slight grin.

I can’t deny that it feels good to have him next to me. The past few days have been a lot to deal with, and having him here has brought this level of comfort I didn’t know I was missing.

“A part of me wondered if I would ever see you again,” I admit.

“Why wouldn’t you?”

I shrug. “I figured I’d be in Nashville and you’d be somewhere else, playing baseball.”

He looks out to the lake as he says, “Well, plans change.”

I want to ask him more but don’t want to ruin the feeling between us right now. Plus, there’s no good way to ask why one wasn’t able to follow their dreams, especially on the day where all of yours came true.

“I’m glad I got to see you again.” I move my hand slightly to hold his hand a little more.

He turns back to face me. “Me too.”

We stare at each other. The pull between us is harder than it’s ever been. My eyes start to burn from wanting to blink, but I don’t want this moment to change in any way, even for that quick second that a blink would cause.

Seeing his green eyes stare into mine proves that he wants this too. I’m terrified to go back to the past, but I’d be lying if I said I ever really left him, in my heart mainly.

It’s always been him.

I’ve seen the guys jump from girls to girls, but I’ve never dated anyone longer than a few months. Every person I meet, I compare to him.

But in my heart, there is no comparison.

He leans forward slightly, and I instinctively lick my lips. The motion silently gives him permission, and he grins ever so slightly as he moves in a little closer.

My chest aches from the fear of the leap we’re about to take.

Once we open this door back up, I’m not sure if we can ever shut it.
