When I get back home, Dad and Justine’s bedroom door is closed, and I don’t even want to know why. For as long as I can remember, my dad has been single, and it’s been weird, getting used to him being with someone.

I like Justine, and I’m excited to have a baby brother or sister, but sometimes, I miss the time alone with just my dad.

Instead of going to my room like I normally do, I grab a soda from the fridge and plop down on the couch to put on a movie. Before it even starts, Dad exits his room, shutting the door behind him and heading my way.

“Mind if I join you?” he asks.

I slide down to the corner of the L-shaped couch to make room for him. “Sure.”

“Did you see Nate Bowmen’s back in town?” he asks.

Dad and I have followed Nate’s career for years. When he made it to the MLB we both lost our minds. To know a kid from Mason Creek made it to the show gave me so much hope. Still does.

“No, I didn’t know that,” I respond perked up at the mention of his name.

“I’ll reach out and see if we can have lunch or something while he’s here. What are you watching?” He nods toward the TV.

“I was just about to watchDie Hard.”

“It’s not Christmas movie time already, is it?” he jokes.

“Hey, enjoy this one while you can, as I’m sure Justine will have you watching the girlie ones here in no time.”

“As will Hannah with you.” He nudges my foot that’s close to him. “How are you two?”

“Great,” I respond with no thought at all even though I’m heartbroken she won’t even try to come with me to college.

“Any word on what she’ll do after school?”

I shrug. “Stay here, I guess. She’s not really sure what her options are. Once we graduate, sounds like she’ll just get a job to help her mom.”

He nods slightly. “It’s hard, being a single mom. Bobbi’s done an amazing job with her though.”

“Yeah. She’s constantly working, it seems.”

He pauses, being more serious. “Are you still respecting her?”

I roll my eyes at him. “Yes, Dad. Don’t worry. You won’t be a new dad and a grandpa at the same time, I promise.”

“Good man.”

CHAPTERFOUR

Hannah

I’m sitting in my room when my phone rings with a FaceTime call from Tucker.

“Hey, Tucker,” I answer. “What’s going on?”

“Oh, good. You do have my number. I didn’t think about how you might not know who was FaceTiming you,” he responds.

“Yeah, I got your number a while ago, just in case I needed to contact you in an emergency.”

“See,” I hear Justine say in the background. “It’s just smart to do.”
