“Guess we’re getting all your favorites, Amber,” Red said. “Hold on.”

“Ferguson,” Dr. McCarthy’s voice came on the line. “You can’t send me patients and not come with.”

“My bad doc,” she replied with a sly smile. “Had a little pass off to do with Kevin.”

“This a friend of yours?” he asked.

“Would it matter?” she questioned. “Because last time I checked, you actually cared about patients.”

“I told you not to tell people that.” He laughed.

“He gonna be okay?” she asked, thinking about how they’d spoke of a young child being at home.

“Not quite as pretty, but I’m hoping to monitor only. Anything they may have left out of the accident report?”

“He pulled his wife on top of him the best he could when he laid the bike down,” she said, a hard knot in her throat. “Or they both would have been headless.”

“Quit going for my soft spot,” McCarthy said his voice mellowing.

“I didn’t tell you about his kid.”

“You’re killing me Ferguson, but there’s a man in a lot of leather with a scowl on his face wanting his phone back, I think.”

“He’s a doctor, what else would you expect? You know you’re all dicks,” she teased.

“Bye Amber, I have to write up my admission orders,” McCarthy said. “If you come check on Mr. Allen, look for me.”

“Hey, Red again, look we’ve got some shuffling to do to get these guys out of here. Thanks for checking in.”

“You know when? I’m still in Billings about to head home.”

“That’s sweet, but you’ve done enough,” he replied.

She shook her head wondering why she was being so accommodating. Sure, she had the night off, but who spends their free time shuttling accident victims, instead of taking a long bath with a big glass of wine? Oh, her dumb ass. “Well, I have to come back up to get my monsters if you want help with Lil’ Bit tomorrow.”

“That won’t be necessary. We can send a van for her.”

“No, I would really like to do this for you. I have a van and she would be comfortable in it on their way home.” She bit on her lip for a moment. “I saw you guys were on a charity ride, just figured another set of medical hands might help.”

“That’s really nice of you. Can I call you tomorrow and let you know?”

“Sure. That will be fine. I have to pick up my kids at six, so I can come by the hospital. No reason to send another group up when I have to come to Billings anyway.”

“Amber, thank you,” he let out a light sigh. “I really appreciate the offer. We’re still trying to process.”

“Dr. Luke, I’m happy to help.”

“Please call me Red. All my friends do.”

“Okay Red. I’ll talk to you tomorrow.” Amber disconnected the call. Putting the van in drive, she decided to head home.

Embarrassed a bit, she tried to break down why she was pushing so hard to help. Was it the cries from Kristy as she was being held back by her brother? She’d always felt a bit of loss once a patient moved on to the floor. Where others were happy to discharge or admit their patients, she wanted to know they were fine. It was the one thing she liked working in a clinic setting now. The only thing that came back to her was the big guy in leather, the one with the other woman on the back of his bike. Was he the real reason she wanted to help?

It was dark when she pulled into her driveway. The light on her porch made her jump when it lit up.Get a motion sensor, she thought,it’s safer. Sure, as long as don’t have cardiac issues.

Flopping on the couch, every creak in the house echoed. The heater turning on, a piece of paper fluttering over a vent. Strange, how empty the place felt without the kids dive bombing her. When they were here, she prayed for silence.

A shower would help, she told herself since sleep didn’t come easy to Amber. Too many years of overnights and shift work. When it finally did, she would wake a few hours later with a nightmare. She hated these kind of nights. Eight straight hours who did that? Psychos, she assumed.
