“Habit? Reflex? It’s my baseline,” Mountain admitted. “Resting kick ass voice.”

She shook her head with a smile. “Both really,” she said. “JDM is like rheumatoid arthritis, but worse.”

“Because the kid isn’t sixty with decades of playing sports or hard manual labor that damaged their joints?”

“Partially, he can get rashes, really bad weakness in his muscles, drop ten pounds in a blink of an eye when and if he has a flare. And flares aren’t two days, give him steroids and he’s back.” She breathed in. “It can be months. The rheumatologist we found is amazing with Callum and he’s not nearly as bad as the other kids he sees, but they’re in Denver.”

“Not that I want you to move, but why are you still in Montana?”

“Kevin won’t let me leave the state with the kids and I’d need his permission. And Callum really can go months without being seen,” she explained. “We do check ins through messages and if it wouldn’t have been for this flare up, we would have made it a full year.”

“So in the last year, you haven’t been taking off work?” he questioned.

“Nope, just the last month,” she said. “I had the time to take banked, but doesn’t mean they wanted me to take it.”

“I can’t believe they fired you for that.” Mountain pulled her up against his body and wrapped a protective arm around her. “We’ll figure out something. Let me talk to Red.”

“Oh, you don’t have to do that. I’ll find something.” Amber let out a soft sigh. “If they are willing to say they laid me off, I’m going to hold my cards close to my chest and run with it.”

“Seriously, give me a few days to worry about it. I have some ideas. Totally selfish on my part, I don’t want you to have to move away. I kind of like you a little.” Mountain slipped his fingers between hers and brought her hand to his lips for a light kiss. “Want to see if you could hold your own in game night.”

“I want to stay right here. Berrington has become my home. The kids go to school here and neither of them want to go to a different school.”

“What if you got a job in Turnabout? Turnabout is in Berrington’s school district, but better yet, Dreamer has opened a small school there, kinda free flowing but I bet they would be happy going.”

“That’s an idea. But look, let’s not worry about that right now. Let’s finish our movie.” Amber flipped the sound back on. She had muted it when they started talking.

Mountain let the woman rest against him as he wrapped his arm around her body and intertwined their fingers.

Her eyes began to droop after Forrest got shot in the buttox and by the time he showed President Nixon, she was out.
