“Can’t use that one, it’s completely in your control,” Mountain teased back. “It’s more like every time the gas price changes or every time the weather knocks out your cable.”

“Okay, that’s two lines if it’s before eight-thirty. I need my pixel babysitter sometimes.”

A few moms walked over.

“Amber good to see you,” one of the mom’s spoke up.

“Gladys it’s good to see you,” Amber replied.

“Who do we have here?” The other one pointed to Mountain as if he were a puppy or some pile of goodies to pass out to the kids after the game.

“This is Mountain.”

He stood, wiping off his hands on his jeans before shaking each of their hands. “It’s a pleasure, ladies.”

“You are very tall. I know why they call you Mountain,” Gladys said, eyeing him a bit before pointing to his cut. “You belong to those Steels that are in Turnabout?”

“Yes ma’am.” Mountain looked down at his leather jacket then back at the two women.

“Well, I always wondered what they were all about,” the other woman said.

“Gladys, Trudy the game is about to start and for one I don’t want to miss anything. I’ll talk to you all later.” Amber smiled then turned her attention back to the game that had just started with a loud whistle.

Mountain was relieved when the women took the hint and left them.

“They would have asked you a thousand questions if I hadn’t said that. You can thank me later.” Amber winked.

Mountain nodded and tried to control his growing smile. “I’m not one to owe a woman, so you’ll have to let me know what you’re wanting in thanks.”

“Hmm,” Amber hummed, glancing at the playground to check in with Callum before refocusing on Maisie. “I’ll get back to you.”

After the game ended, Mountain folded the chair and put it back in the bag.

“Callum,” Amber called out but he kept playing with the steering wheel on the playground equipment. “Callum.”

Mountain tapped her shoulder before putting his index finger and thumb between his lips, with a hard blow the whistle cut across the field so loud that the game playing with the older kids stopped. “Shit, my bad,” he said under his breath.

“Callum, now,” Amber said.

The kid finally turned, then came over, no longer running.

Mountain noticed he was limping slightly.

“Thank you,” Amber said.

“Anytime,” he said and when Callum was close enough, he scooped him up and carried the kid.

Callum appeared to be relieved to not be walking anymore. “Thanks Mountain,” he said before resting his head on Mountain’s shoulder.

“You good?” Amber asked Maisie.

“Yeah, it was fun,” Maisie said with a shrug. “You count the points?”

“Um, no,” Amber replied, but the lie laced her tone.

“Oh, I think we lost.”

“But you had fun right?” Amber asked.
