“Yes, I know you have kids, but you also share custody so at least to start with, it would only be when you didn’t have to get a babysitter,” he said.

Once again, Amber sat back, astounded by the thought put in by the man about her kids.

“Roadkill and I are ten to twenty minutes out depending on the weather, but our SOP allow you to stitch up a wound, give meds, hell if someone has an obvious stroke push TPA and call me if they meet the guidelines,” he said. “You don’t need my order. I’ll put it in later.”

“Damn right you will,” Lil’ Mama’s voice carried to the breakroom.

Red stood to pull the breakroom door closed.

“No fair,” Preacher Girl’s yelled through the door.

“Save the life, I’ll do the damn paperwork,” he said. “Most nights are an uncomfortable sleep on a gurney. Right now, I have to come in or split the time with Roadkill. Having a third, even if it’s only a few nights a month will help.”

“What was deal with the travelling nurse?” Amber asked.

Red intertwined his fingers and stretched his arms above his head, before settling back down and placing his hands on the table. “Here’s the deal, our club has a side project that we don’t share with people because it can get, mostly women hurt.”

“The deal with the Blood Sports?” she question and the hard line on Red’s face told she’d over stepped. “I’m sorry, yesterday—”

“They crossed a line,” he said. “And I apologize for that, it is being handled.”

Handled? What the hell did that mean?

“No, let me tell you the salary, benefits, et cetera and you can let me know if you’re interested.”

“You don’t want to know about me?” she questioned.

“I’ve spoke to no fewer than six of different doctors in Billings, who all miss you,” he said. “That tells me more than slip of paper that tells me you graduated. Tell me the letters behind your name and that will actually help me with your salary.”

“B.S.N.” she said. “Was thinking about my masters before I left Billings, they had a program that paid most of the schooling back.”

“Bachelors is more than enough here,” he said. “But we’re all about additional schooling. Honestly keep up with your CEUs so we don’t have the Board of Health sniffing around and I’ll be good.”

Red wrote down a figure that made her eyes widen.

“Medical is me, but we do have a kinda shitty plan that’s actually covering Baldy pretty good. I hear you do need a specialist from time to time,” he said. “I’ll have Lil’ Mama look into the plans that keep approaching us and we can reevaluate. End of the year open enrollment, she’s seen more pamphlets than expected. Treatment here is free for staff and their family.”

“Can we circle back to the traveling nurse?” she asked. “And the fact Preacher Girl scared her.”

“Not to point fingers, but she scared you too,” he said. “Not sure how the girl couldn’t weigh a hundred pounds.” This time, Red drummed his hands on the table. “You’re not going to agree to the job without knowing are you?” he asked.

Amber shook her head no. Sure, the SOP being loosened might make a few travelers uneasy, licenses and all being what they are the fact they could travel the country, hell even the world on the dime of a facility needing their skill.

“Fine, when we started the club, my wife had been approached by a woman who is part of network. One that will have you seeing patients from time to time that we won’t be calling the police for.”

“The mob?” she questioned.

“No, though they might like the comparison. We rescue women from bad situations. Help them get new identities, homes, starts basically. Our club gets tapped when someone is close or someone needs medical attention.”

“Preacher Girl was one of those?” she asked.

“She was a proximity thing, but yeah, she was set to marry some seventy year old or something and be wife number whatever and at eighteen, she didn’t want to,” he said. “Lil’ Mama, was pregnant, broken leg, history of fatty embolism and lost babies from being beaten so bad by her ex.”

“So the women stay,” she said.

“Not usually,” he replied. “But a handful have. At the same time, we’ve gotten tapped late too.”

Amber’s heart clenched.
