They pulled up to a house and Amber loved the outside of it. At the very edge of the town it was a home from the nineties instead of the older homes they’d been touring. Someone with a bit more money had built a home closer to those in the cities that professionals lived in. The other houses were perfect for families in a small town that they believed were growing in the fifties and sixties.

“I don’t think I could afford this.” Amber shook her head at the two car attached garage home with stone work around the doorway.

“Red not offering to pay you enough? Because this would be the perfect house for you. But I would like for you to look at the land I picked out. I do plan on building a house.”

Amber thought Mountain was getting a little too invested in their relationship. She wasn’t ready for that kind of commitment. “Are you planning on building either way?” she asked.

“Probably, I’m a little grown to be living in a frat house basically. And as you can see, apartments in town aren’t really too great either.”

“Neighbors complaining about noise and all,” she said with a smirk.

“Check it out, I know Baldy and Lil’ Bit were thinking about this one also, but they go back and forth on a lot of houses.”

“Well, if they want it—”

He held up his hand to silence her. “They’ve been trying to pick a house for a year now. Heck, you renting it for a few months might just help them finally make a decision.”

“Then I’d be packing twice,” she said as they stepped inside the first place with vaulted ceilings. “Wow.”

This time, Callum and Maisie took off to explore.

“You fix any of these?” she asked after seeing the last on his list.

“I do piece work, what I know to do. Heavy lifting during demo mostly,” he said. “But I’m good at plumbing for some strange reason. The finer detail stuff is hard for me.”

“Why not here?” she questioned. “Because of Baldy and Lil’ Bit?”

“Outside of getting noise complaints?” he teased her with a bump to her hip since they were finally alone in a kitchen because Maisie had finally gotten into the spirit after she realized each house had a room for each of them and she wouldn’t have to share with Callum.

“Yes,” she replied.

“Well, I grew up with a lot of space to roam. I knew the barriers, but I could have adventures. Guess it would be different here since coyotes and the like are around.”

“Don’t have an anvil to drop on his head?” she said.

“Exactly.” He leaned on the edge of the sink and looked out the window to the backyard. “The kids can play, but I like the idea of ATVs and snowmobiles.”

“Spring time in the ER, ATVs flipping and breaking legs.”

“Maybe a dog to go with Spot,” he countered not adding to her tales of misadventure. “I like the idea of having everything my size too.”

Amber spied he was leaning practically in half at the moment. Even she had to agree having the counters, a few inches higher would save her back.

“How tall is Kevin?” Mountain asked jarring her from the moment with talk of her ex.

“A few inches taller than me,” she said.

“See a custom house will save Callum from cracking his head.”

“And you’re gonna build me one?” she asked with a smile as she turned around and leaned against the counter.

“Only if you want it,” he said and brought his hand to her cheek.

Her heart sped up as he leaned down to almost kiss her when Maisie came running in with Callum behind her.

“What are you doing?” Maisie accused.

Mountain pressed on Amber’s cheek with his thumb. “Eyelash gone,” he said after pulling her eye down a bit. “I don’t see anything else, but we could have Red double check.”
