“The what?” Amber questioned, her eyebrows knitting together as she glanced at the woman’s chart and saw an actual diagnosis. “You have lupus?”

“Yes, that’s why Hannah is going to take my blood. We’ve been working on a few things, but you know even with bouncing between the Aleve and the Advil for pain, my organs are gonna do what they need to do.”

“I am so sorry,” Amber said unsure if she was apologizing for the past year of believing the woman was a drug seeker or for not recognizing the signs, that according to the chart, Red saw almost immediately.

“I’d been seeing Dr. Monroe for so many years.” Mrs. Nelson shook her head. Nearly fifty-five with decades of misdiagnosis it was a wonder the woman was even alive. “Dr. Luke saw me through a different lens. Even helped me ween off the Oxy.”

“Today is my first day here and I have to say, seeing you has shone a spotlight on what I was already beginning to believe about this place,” Amber replied.

Preacher Girl knocked on the door and came in with a lab kit to do her blood draw.

“And then there’s the vampire,” Mrs. Nelson said, the smile on her face reflecting a life changed in only a few months of treatment.

“I have to set up for another patient. Enjoy being drained of blood,” Amber joked and left, dropping the file in the box outside the door for Red before moving to room three with the second.

Opening the door, she walked inside and set up the room readying it for Red to check over a patient. After setting up everything for him to excise what he could and drain the infection. With Red being a trained surgeon, she wondered if he only performed small procedures or if she would be called upon for major surgery. It wasn’t as if he had the equipment for laparoscopic surgeries, even if he had the skill for it. For the most part, the clinic saw similar patients to what she would normally, but the way Red explained it, at times they were basically an emergency room.

Two hours later, she began closing up the clinic side by side with Preacher Girl. Every room needed full sterilization and she finished by mopping the clinic’s floor. This was a new duty she wasn’t sure she was liking, but then again the increase in pay might be worth a little mop and bucket work. When it came down to it, Amber noticed she wasn’t being asked to do anything more than the Luke’s had done and would do. Finishing her first day, she found more satisfaction with her work than she had in years. Something she believed she’d left when she moved from the ER to clinical work.

Flipping off the last light. “I’m ready. You done?” she asked Preacher Girl who was shutting down the computer.

“Yeah in general, the club likes us to stay in pairs especially when we’re on watch. Thanks for staying with me.” Preacher Girl finished by shutting off the light in the reception area.

When the back door opened Amber jumped, but Preacher Girl just waved at the leather clad man who came in with a woman, both had bags and turned into the breakroom.

“Overnight,” Preacher Girl explained as the sound of a TV filled the darkened clinic. “Lights off, but there’s a buzzer for important things. Red says you’ll be taking a few shifts.”

“Yes, but are they medical staff too?”

“Not really,” Preacher Girl said with a shrug. “Weekdays we don’t usually get much, it’s the weekends when the clinic hasn’t been open all day and people are doing stupid things in the streets.”

“Right, that’s when Red wants me to work.”

“Yep.” Preacher Girl slipped on the leather coat similar to the one Mountain had and then pulled her long chestnut hair out to let it cover the back of the coat. “Basic first aid they can do, but for the most part, they get the person comfortable and call Dr. Luke to come in.”

“I understand why the guys had to go on a run. They save a lot of people. But why is the club on watch?” Amber wrapped her coat around her and buttoned up.

“The Blood Sport threatened Mountain. We don’t take that lightly. It’s just best to be safe than sorry.” Preacher Girl finished buttoning up her coat then both of the girls walked outside to their cars.

The early darkness betraying the hour as winter was coming which meant the kids would be inside in the dark.

Amber unlocked her van and opened the door. “Okay, but they didn’t really do anything to Mountain. I just don’t see a reason to be so careful. It’s a new way of life for me. Seemed more like chest beating than anything, unless they approached him another time I don’t know about. I never had to worry like this, is it common?”

“Normally, we don’t either. I don’t question my husband. When Hack tells me to be careful and not to leave the clinic by myself, I listen to him.” Preacher Girl opened her car and got in.

“I guess you’re right. I’ll be careful and see you tomorrow.” Amber shut the door and started her van.

Driving to her house, she had time to think about her life now that she had Mountain in it. It was thrilling and happy, but she still wasn’t sure about this club stuff. She had children to consider and it was scary knowing that other clubs always wanted something from you.”

Pulling up to her house, she noticed her ex’s car in the driveway. Her kids were home with a babysitter and he wasn’t supposed to be here. Hell, he never came to Berrington, that is why she drove to Billings every two weeks. Her moving out of town had been an inconvenience he reminded her of ever few months.

Walking into her house, she heard her kids in the kitchen with Kevin. Her babysitter, a young teenager, who had been her go to for a couple of years now, was sitting in the living room. One foot tucked under her leg as she sat on the couch, with phone in hand.

“Hi Sadie how were the kids?”

“They were good.” She pointed to the kitchen. “Sorry about that.”

“No, it’s all good. I’ll take care of him. Thanks for today. I’ll see you tomorrow.”
