What if Nightingale lost her kids? He was getting attached to those little ones and her, but if her ex made her choose between him and them, there would be no choice. He would be out and she would have to move back to Billings because there was no job nearby.

“I’m ordering some food how about any of you?” Mountain asked in need of comfort food.

Cream laughed. “I’m hungry too.”

“I probably should eat since I never got my breakfast,” Nightingale replied.

Mountain took her cold hand in his. “It’s gonna be okay,” he assured.

“He’s right,” Cream said. “Nothing you did put your children’s life in danger, but I do have one question for Mountain.”

A vice gripped his heart and his gut bubbled.

Cream’s dark eyes implored him as her voice switched from the normal joking tone to one serious as if she were checking boxes off for potential issues. “Arrests? Convictions? Sentences? Will he be able to find anything in your past?”

While he had sentenced himself in a way, following the suicide of his former girlfriend in high school, he himself had not been charged. Sadly, his brother should have, but money can get anyone out of anything it seemed. And for Valter, the fact he was a Jensen meant anyone would want to sleep with him and Lacie had been lying. Calling him out as a rapist because Mountain had found out she’d slept with his brother.

Only it wasn’t a lie and the shame had been too much for her. His disbelief in her words and tears crushing her to the point, she saw no hope for herself. No one believed her, not even the boy who said he loved her. That is why the Steels pulled him in. They helped. They cared for the broken. And most importantly, they believed. While it was too late to right the wrong when it came to Lacie, Mountain had decided if no one else would listen, he would. “Nothing that would effect this,” he replied and reached for a menu even though he knew what he wanted.

“Even a DUI could be used against you,” Cream prodded.

“I don’t have a record,” he replied.

“And the Blood Sport business?”

“Doesn’t matter,” he replied wondering if by taking on gun running he was jeopardizing more than he thought.

Cream reviewed all the filings as they ate and concluded Nightingale wouldn’t lose her kids over a picnic and a sleepover. Mountain relaxed a bit and even Nightingale began to eat a bit. Her nerves quelling a bit.

“So, you paint his toenails during the sleepover?” Bounty teased.

“No, but if Maisie had been up, it might have happened.” Nightingale laughed.

“See this is why we can’t have a girl,” Bounty reasoned. “I’ll pass out and end up contoured and with my hair braided.”

“Yes, but a boy will get milk drunk and run around naked, wagging his thing everywhere.”

“No he won’t,” Bounty replied.

“Why not? You do,” she teased.

“There are few perks to being the only two in the house, and you walk around flashing me left and right.” Bounty shook his head. “Then you grab your boobs, squeeze and walk away.”

“They’re mine and I can play with them whenever I want to.”

“Domestic bliss,” Mountain whispered in Nightingale’s ear.

“I can’t remember the last time I did a walk by flashing,” she said with a giggle, “but I’m thinking I might need up my seduction game.”
