“What do you think you’re doing?” Kevin hollered as Mountain opened the back door. “What is he doing, Amber? Get your pit bull out of my truck and away from my daughter.”

“Call Red,” Mountain said with an emergent sharp tone to his voice. Holding Maisie on his hip like a toddler, he brought her into the clinic, pushing past Kevin and into the first exam room.

“What is going on?” Amber asked, her heart beating rapidly as she went to her daughter at the same time Mountain picked Kevin up and tossed him into the waiting room chairs as if he were as light as a tire. The crash made her turn away from whatever had Mountain panicking and demanding a doctor for Maisie. “Mountain,” she cried, but it was too late.

Kevin tried to stand again, only to have Mountain lift him once again in the air and toss him at the other set of chairs. “You broke her fucking arm you asshole,” Mountain growled out as his fist sent Kevin flying backwards down the hall. “How does it feel being beaten by a man twice your size you little pissant.”

“No I didn’t, it’s not broken.”

Amber helped Maisie from her coat as gingerly as she could and the dip along her forearm was unmistakable, it was a struggle to push up on her sleeve.

Maisie cried out in pain for her purpled, swollen arm.

“Jesus,” Amber gasped and moved Maisie so she was sitting. Giving her a pillow to prop her arm up and ignored the destruction and beating going on outside the room. “I’m gonna get you some ice and we’re gonna have Dr. Luke take care of you.” Trembling, Amber stepped out, so she could call Red, but ran into Hollywood in uniform and Onyx holding Callum’s hand.

“I need Red,” she said. “Can one of you call him, tell him eight year old with an obvious right arm deformity and swelling, possible wrist dislocation on top of the more than likely broken ulna and radius.”

“So he did break her arm,” Hollywood said.

Now, she noticed Kevin was being pinned to the hallway wall by Mountain’s elbow in his chest. “I don’t know—I haven’t gotten that far in my exam— I haven’t gotten to how it happened.”

“I’ll tell him to bring Roadkill too,” Onyx said. “You be her mom, not her nurse.”

Amber went in search of a pediatric dose ofNubainto cut the edge off the pain as Onyx and Callum went to the waiting room.

“Why did Mountain beat up my dad?” Callum asked.

Amber was in the middle of too much chaos to handle the question.

“Because he doesn’t like when big guys pick on little girls,” Onyx said as Topaz began took the pass off of Callum and they began righting the chairs in the lobby.

“I have to start an IV,” Amber said trying to settle herself as she pulled theNubainfrom the locked box. With tears in her eyes, she turned to Kevin. “Why would you drive two hours and not take her to an ER?”

“I thought she was being dramatic.”

“Did you look at it?” she spat. “You’re not a moron. You didn’t even give her a fucking icepack.”

“She was upset about having a babysitter—”

“Why did she have a babysitter? You have them for two days Kevin. Two.” Amber threw her hands up. “I can’t. I have to take care of Maisie right now.”

“Momma, I’m sorry,” Maisie snuffed and wiped her nose with the back of her good hand.

“Baby you have nothing to be sorry about.” Amber gloved up and stroked her daughter’s good hand, wiping off the goo and using an alcohol prep to clean the area. “But I am sorry because I want to give you some pain medication and the best way to do it is through an IV.”

“I don’t want a needle in me.”’

“I know,” Amber said as she held Maisie’s hand. “But do you remember what mommy said an IV was?”

“It’s like a straw.”

“Exactly. The needle does not stay in your hand. Just the straw and who’s afraid of a straw?” Amber found the vein quickly, trying to keep Maisie distracted with Hollywood standing in the doorway. Any other place she wouldn’t be able to start an IV or give the meds, but she was sure SOP in Red’s clinic was to get rid of pain the best you can.

“Hey Maisie,” Hollywood said. “Wanna tell me what happened?”

An hour later, Red had set Maisie’s arm and they were waiting for it to dry. Topaz had gotten Callum and Maisie to-go food from across the street and Amber was emotionally exhausted.

“The stories line up,” Hollywood said as he stepped inside the exam room. “Between Red’s exam then Maisie’s and Kevin’s description, I don’t believe he broke her arm.”
