“That’s a bonus. You won’t be able to say how bad it is.”

Sarah smiled. She didn’t have an appetite either. She leaned her head back against the couch and closed her eyes. The air moved around her face, and Kendra’s lips touched her forehead.

“At least I don’t have to worry about catching it from you,” she said. “I’ll go and make tea.”

Sarah drifted into thoughtless space. Her mind had never been as quiet, and she didn’t care about anything or anyone. It was an odd sensation, like letting go, and as she thought about leaving behind Abi and Reece, she cried.

“Hey,” Kendra whispered and wiped away her tears.

Sarah opened her eyes and straightened her back in the chair. “Sorry, I was just feeling sorry for myself.”

Kendra sat next to her and handed over a mug of tea. “You have every right to. You’ve just been through hell and back.”

“I was thinking about my children.”

Kendra sipped her tea. “Jeremy said he would get a message to your family.”

“I was thinking about losing them.” The kindness she saw in Kendra’s eyes brought more tears to the surface.

“Why would you lose them?” Kendra asked.

Sarah shook her head. She didn’t know the answer. “I don’t think I’ve ever felt as vulnerable as I do now. The last few hours, being out of it, being at my lowest. Maybe I’m just feeling weak.”

Kendra rubbed Sarah’s thigh gently. “You’re going to feel like shit for a few days, no doubt, but you’ll bounce back. You’re going to be the next PM, but you don’t have to win that fight today. I put your phone on charge in the kitchen. You want to call them?”

Sarah stroked Kendra’s face. “They’ll be at school. Later.”

Kendra held Sarah’s hand to her cheek and kissed the palm. “I’ll get some soup. Good job I didn’t go all out on a roast beef.”

Sarah smiled. “Eating roast beef without any taste buds would be harsh.”

“We’ll save that for when you’re feeling better.”

Kendra left the room, and Sarah closed her eyes. The noises from the kitchen faded from her awareness.

“Wakey, wakey,” Kendra said.

Sarah opened her eyes.

“Here, Jeremy’s been trying to get hold of you.”

Sarah took her phone, studied the messages asking her to call him urgently, and put it face down on the arm of the chair.

“I can leave if you need to talk to him in private,” Kendra said.

“Nothing’s that urgent. I’m sick. He can wait.”

Kendra left and returned with two bowls of soup.

Sarah took a mouthful. It should have tasted of chicken and vegetables, judging by what she could see of the contents, but it only registered as warm and wet.

“It’s good,” Kendra said, “in case you were wondering.”

Sarah laughed. “It looks lovely.”

“Can’t tempt you to a glass of wine then?”

Sarah scrunched up her face. She finished almost all the soup and sat with the bowl in her lap. Kendra took it from her and cleared away. She returned with baked cookies. Sarah nodded her head. “I can’t do one of those yet.”
